There will be at least two pre-trip weekend gatherings scheduled that will be
backpacking trips. They will likely be scheduled in May and June 2007.
Yosemite's wide range of elevation provides an excellent opportunity to
the trip participants to study and investigate a broad spectrum of flora
and fauna, including 37 kinds of native trees, over 1,000 species of
wildflowers, 85 species of mammals, over 150 species of birds and 33
varieties of reptiles and amphibians.
Another highlight of this trip is to learn the story of Yosemite's
geologic past by simply observing the sheer granite walls of Yosemite
Valley and Hetch Hetchy. The geologic history is also written on the
polished domes and jagged peaks of the high country and in glacially

RISK ASSESSMENT
Please assess the risks and hazards of your trip. Carefully consider each area of risk and how it may affect your trip.
Devise a plan to prevent each hazard and to respond to it if it becomes necessary. Please be very specific for each section
if applicable.
Trail conditions, river crossings, weather, wildlife (bears, snakes, etc.)
Climate/terrain
Potential hazards
With any hiking there will be risk of inclimate weather including thunderstorms and wet
and rocky trails. There is also high bear activity in Yosemite.
Response
Our group will travel together at all times for safety purposes for all external risks. We
will carry bear canisters for our food, will carry bear spray and always travel in small
groups (minimum of 4) since it is bear country. The leaders will carry two-way radios
and there will always be a lead and a sweep in the group. August is a drier season in
Yosemite and most waterfalls will be dry and some streams/rivers will be less full.

Road conditions, drivers, insurance
Transportation
Potential hazards
The roads are paved and well marked. There is some small risk that the drivers could
lose control of the vehicle or that we could be involved in an accident which is not our
fault.
Response
We will rent mini-vans for the group and take out extra insurance as well as have a
second driver for each vehicle. The road is paved and easy to manage. Once in the park,
we might take park shuttles to get to trailheads. We will carry cell phones and have the
roadside assistance number for the rental agency as well as the park roadside assistance.
The leader also has a AAA membership.
Level of fitness, screening concerns, experience with equipment or activity
Participants
Potential hazards
With any backpacking trip there is always potential with individuals not having quite the
aerobic ability or capacity to take on strenuous activity. Personality conflicts can also
play a part in the way the group dynamics.
Response
Careful screening will take place for each trip participant which includes a phone
interview. Every participant is required to have backpacking experience, and recent and
intermediate level backpacking is preferred. If necessary, we will ask for an AMC trip
