TRIP DETAILS A) Executive Summary: Brief outline of trip and trip activities. Arrive in Jackson, Wyoming and spend one night in a hotel. Then camp in Yellowstone for two days and do day hikes. Continue with a 5-day/4-night backpack in Grand Teton National Park. August 6: Arrive Jackson Hole, take a shuttle service to the hotel (stay in Jackson Hole motel in walking distance from shops and restaurants) August 7: Dayhikes in Yellowstone (camp in Yellowstone) Collaborate with the educational non-profit for the park--Yellowstone Association for some educational components during our dayhikes for both days. They provide transportation within the park. This will allow for some acclimitization given that most of the park is at 7500' and higher. August 8: Dayhikes in Yellowstone (camp in Yellowstone). Shuttle service to take us to Tetons. August 9-13: Backpack circuit , probably Granite Canyon/Paintbrush Canyon via Teton Crest Trail, 37.9 miles, 4 nights, staying in Alaska Basin 2 nights August 13: Stay additional night in Jackson Hole motel August 14: Take Shuttle service back to the airport. For examples, please see <http://snebulos.mit.edu/orgs/amc/mission/> This trip will enable the participants to get an in-depth and full immersion into the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem through a) a detailed and personalized attention of a professional guide for two days and b) a remote and 5-day backcountry experience which will enable the participants to move their classroom into the Grand Teton mountains. The Yellowstone Association, the educational outreach arm of the national park, will provide our group with a guide for two days. This experience will serve as a stepping stone to our subsequent backpacking trip. The group will learn more and experience first-hand the famous geysers, hot springs, mudpots and fumaroles--all evidence of volcanic activity--within the park. Abundant wildlife also prosper in the park including grizzly and black bears, bighorn sheep, wolves, coyote, moose, prong-horn, bison, bald eagles, peregrine falcons (and more than 300 species of birds) and mountain lions. While in Teton park, the group will hike to the outstanding pristine wilderness of the Alaska Basin where wildflowers abound in mid-August. F) Outfitters: Will this trip require an outfitter? Then, devise a plan to attempt to prevent each hazard and to respond to it if it becomes necessary. A) Climate/Terrain Potential Hazards: The terrain will be mountainous. Some exposure to higher altitudes, lightening and adverse weather conditions. We will be hiking in bear country. Response: Leader will make judgement calls on where to go if weather or terrain are not favorable. Participants will be screened for previous backpacking experience. An overview will be given regarding bear safety and all precautions will be taken as advised by the park service. It is purported to be one of the best emergency backcountry response teams in the U.S. They can do helicopter and horse rescues. Otherwise, light injuries are treated and evacuation is done by horse or on foot.
