C) Leader Experience and Training
New Leaders: If you are a new leader or co-leader, you must have submitted the form
“Application to Become a Major Excursions Leader.” Please attach a copy of that form.
Applications for the Leader and both Co-Leaders will be mailed separately.
Experienced Major Excursions Leaders: Please list below the last three trips you have led for the
AMC including destination, type of trip (backpacking, skiing, etc.), dates, and number of
participants. Feel free to list additional trips you have led, particularly if they demonstrate
experience related to the trip you are proposing.
1.
2.
3.
D) Scouting: Have you or your co-leader led this trip before or traveled in the area? Yes
If yes, please describe:
The leader is native to the area, having lived there until he was 26. He has hiked
extensively in the area, including being a Mountain Rescue Squad member in the 1980s.
E) Special Experience: What special skills or experience are required to lead this trip and how
do you or your co-leader bring these skills and experience?
Leaders of hikes in England should have map-and-compass skills. The Leader has
extensive map-and-compass experience, and he has taken a refresher course during 2002.
The Co-Leaders have map-and-compass skills, and they have taken a refresher course
during 2002.
F) Couples: If leader and co-leader are a couple or have some other close personal relationship,
what are your back up plans if one if you cannot go and the other must stay behind as well?
Or if you are in the field and both of you must return?
Not applicable.
G) Medical History: Both leader and co-leader need to have a recent copy of the AMC
Confidential Medical Form on file at 5 Joy St. This form can be obtained online at
http://snebulos.mit.edu/orgs/amc/ or call Katherine Byers at 617-523-0655 x333 to receive a

III. RISK ASSESSMENT
A) Please assess the risks/hazards of your trip. Carefully consider each area of risk and how it
may affect your trip with specific potential hazards. Then, devise a plan to attempt to prevent
each hazard and to respond to it if it becomes necessary.
Areas of Risk
Climate/Terrain
trail conditions,
weather, etc.
Potential Hazards
Limited visibility
due to fog.
Prevention/Response
Trails followed are popular trails, which will
provide paths that should be easy to follow. If fog
arises, the Leader and Co-Leaders have map-andcompass skills that permit safe return. Participants
will be asked for map-and-compass knowledge in
order to ascertain additional group skills.
One hike will be
over difficult terrain
that requires hand
holding and has
steep drops.
An alternate activity will be available for
participants. If necessary, the hike will be
cancelled. If participants reach the difficult area,
an alternate route is available, or the group will
retreat.
Hypothermia.
Hiking in England is often damp and in the 50s or
60s–ideal hypothermia weather. All participants
will be advised of the signs of hypothermia and
methods of avoidance (layered and non-cotton
clothing, frequent drinking and snacks, etc.).
Leader and Co-Leaders will remind participants
each day of the potential. Escape routes have been
identified for each hike.
England is very similar to the US. The
Participants Handbook will provide an overview
on British culture. During the pre-excursion
meeting, a discussion will be conducted on British
culture.
A commercial licensed coach will be rented for the
duration of the trip to provide all road travel.
Commercially licensed coaches in England must
meet stringent government regulations, including
providing insurance coverage for both the driver
and passengers.
Moderate experience and fitness is required. The
pre-excursion meeting will include a day hike
comparable to those on the trip. Activities during
these pre-excursion events will be similar to those
expected during the excursion. The pre-excursion
meeting will also permit a pre-excursion
evaluation of any group dynamics.
Foreign Countries
political concerns,
crime, language
translation
None particularly.
Transportation
vehicles, drivers,
insurance
Driving.
Participants
skill level, health,
group dynamics

B) Emergency Action Plan
Before you leave for your trip, you will need to provide a list of participants and their emergency
contacts in case something happens to someone in the field as well as an itinerary with phone
numbers (where available) in case something happens at home. In the space below, please
describe your plans for dealing with emergencies. Please use as much detail as possible and
attach additional sheets if necessary.
Where possible, if any problems occur, the group will attempt a self-evacuation. If the
problem looks serious but not incapacitating, the group will rest for a short time (15-30
minutes or as necessary) in order to evaluate the situation as well as eat and drink (all
participants will be required to carry high-energy emergency rations and extra water; even if
some participants use these prior to the emergency, the leaders will have additional rations).
If the situation does not permit a self-evacuation, one of the Leaders will accompany half of
the group (which should be between 5 and 10 people) to obtain rescue by following the
evacuation route to the nearest certain phone (there are many public phones and residential
locations in the areas visited). The other half of the group will stay with the incapacitated
person(s). The group will carry sufficient equipment (bivvy bag, stove, emergency rations,
etc.) to support the incapacitated party and support group for at least 12 hours.
Once evacuated from the backcountry, the Leaders will defer to local medical authorities.
Emergency Communication (phone contacts, language, documentation)
Local medical, backcountry rescue, police, fire: 999.
Local backcountry rescue details are available at http://homepages.enterprise.net/ldsamra.
Evacuation (out of backcountry location, out of foreign country)
All participants will be provided with emergency contact information, including in-country
emergency services (both standard and backcountry rescue) as well as home contact
information for the Leaders. Local medical authorities (see above) will be used where
possible.
Medical Care (local medical facilities – location and quality)
England has world-class medical facilities, including experienced rescue services within the
areas entered. All participants will be advised that they are responsible for medical and
evacuation insurance.

Long Form
We will spend 8 days hiking (6-10 mi./day) in The Lake District region of England, one of
the most beautiful places in Europe. This area abounds with lakes and cragged peaks that
soar thousands of feet upwards from sea-level valleys. After enjoying spectacular trails, we
will return to experience hospitality with that British touch: relaxing in the local pub or
wandering through the eclectic shops. This will be an experience of a slower past with quiet
country lanes, ivy-clad inns, and sheep-dog trials. If an experience of hiking within a hiker’s
paradise is not enough, we will also visit remnants of ancient times: Hadrian’s Wall, a World
Heritage Site, which the Roman’s erected to keep out the northern hordes, and Castlerigg
Stone Circle, a stone circle older than Stonehenge. Approx. cost: $2,690 incl. air/ground
trans., lodging, fees, most meals, and some entertainment.
Short Form
Classic hiking (6-10 mi./day) in The Lake District region of England, one of the most
beautiful places in Europe. After hiking spectacular trails, experience traditional British
hospitality relaxing in the local pub or perusing eclectic shops. Also, visits to Roman and
pre-Roman sites. Approx. cost: $2,690 all inclusive.
