Amontillado’s Revenge
As Montresor returned from the dark depths of the vault, he chuckled at his success of capturing Fortunato. He ascended up the stairs and returned to his life as usual. A few hours after
Montresor’s servants exited from their quarters, carrying on with their unfinished tasks. The maids tided up around the house, the cooks cleaned up the kitchen, and the butlers waited on
Montresor. Meanwhile Fortunato chained up and cold was looking back on life and regretting all the things he did not get to do. Reminiscing on his wife and children, Fortunato began to sob and continued to do so throughout the never-ending, spine-chilling night.
Morning approached, and Montresor awoke with a smirk sprawled across his face, in a room fit for a king. Immediately yelling, “Breakfast shall be served in bed today; for it is a glorious day free of any nuisances.” The cooks scrambled to prepare Montresor’s meal for they knew patience was not in this man’s vocabulary. Within minutes the head butler, Jasper, appeared in the grand, gold detailed doorway with a five star breakfast clutched in his trembling hands. Pleased with the breakfast, Montresor dismissed the butler. Moments later Jasper was called again, for Montresor wanted to have a celebratory drink in honor of Fortunato.
“Jasper…Jasper…Jasper,” called Montresor, “fetch me a glass of Amontillado promptly!” The butler hurried to the kitchen to acquire the glass of wine, but to his dismay the bottle of
Amontillado was empty. However, overhearing Montresor talking to himself, he knew there were reserves of Amontillado downstairs in the vault. Recalling this information Jasper
Last Name 2 disappeared into the darkness seeping from the vault to obtain Montresor’s wine. This task was more daunting than Jasper initially planned, and he searched for the Amontillado venturing deeper and deeper into the vault.
In contrast to Montresor’s awakening, Fortunato awoke with puffy eyes, salty cheeks, and an unpleasant expression. Fortunato had no idea of what time it was since he was so deep in this vault, but he figured it was morning. Recalling his situation and the events that had unfolded the night before, he started to sob again. High pitched cries rang out and tears began falling rapidly from the weary eyes of Fortunato. Little did he know that Jasper was slowly working his way closer and closer to Fortunato’s niche. The butler was focused on the task in front of him but began hearing a faint cry. Curious, Jasper crept further into the vault where the cry became louder and louder. With a strong booming voice Jasper yelled, “Who’s there?” No answer.
Taking a few steps further with the cries intensifying he repeated himself, “Who’s there?” Again no answer, Fortunato’s cries were drowning out Jasper’s voice. Jasper now petrified at what might lie ahead, seeing the bodies and bones scattered about, began to retreat. Before he got too far away he came to a stop, noticing the faint cry was no more. Jasper came to the decision to try to make one last effort to hear a response, “Whoever is there, speak for I am leaving.”
Astonished by the human voice Fortunato thought he was hallucinating considering the niter and mold, but he decided to respond just in case. “It is I, Fortunato. Who are you?” yelled Fortunato.
“I am Jasper, the butler. May I ask what you are doing down here?”
“Jasper... I need your help the Montresor has trapped me down here to die for a mere insult that was just for good fun,” said the Fortunato. Jasper made his way closer to the source of the sound and appeared at the brick catacomb like structure. Believing the Fortunato’s statement, due to the fact Jasper knew how harsh Montresor could be, he began destroying the work Montresor had
Last Name 3 completed that previous night. Jasper responded, “Don’t worry Fortunato I am here to help, but it may take me a while to destroy this wall, I must say it is very well built.”
“Okay, but do hurry for my cough is terrible, and I am feeling very ill,” pleaded Fortunato. An hour passed and the wall was still strong as can be, but Jasper did not surrender and continued to demolish the wall while talking to Fortunato periodically. Luckily, because of how late
Montresor had been up to trap Fortunato, he had dozed off in the middle of his breakfast giving
Jasper plenty of time to free Fortunato.
“Fortunato I have broken through I just need to make the hole wider. Can you see my hand?” asked Jasper. No response. “Hello, Fortunato?” No response. Frantically tearing at the bricks one by one, he revealed a pale faced body in a clown suit, collapsed, chained to the wall, dead. Jasper collapsed himself and began to cry knowing that all of his troubles were useless.
Fortunato had died. Now Jasper made the relentless walk back through the vault up to
Montresor’s quarters Amontillado in hand, where Jasper saw Montresor fast asleep. Furious
Jasper poured the Amontillado he had finally found in an elegant glass, secretly poisoned it, and wrote a letter of resignation for Montresor to discover.
Montresor awoke the next morning, immediately spotting the wine and drinking it in one solid gulp. With a smile from ear to ear Montresor discovered the letter, opened it, and read the letter aloud for it was short and sweet. “Did you enjoy the Amontillado? –Fortunato,” with that horror swept across Montresor’s face as he took one final breath. The curse of the Amontillado had found Montresor just as it had with his dear old friend, Fortunato. The curse of the
Amontillado is still around today; so beware of your actions because the curse of Amontillado may find you next.
