Motlow State Community College Action Plan & Outcome Assessment Report for Institutional Effectiveness Planning Year: July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012 Assessing Year: July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011 Unit: Smyrna Site Related Strategic Goal: 2.2 Increase the number of students who complete associate degrees or certificates. Action Plan #: SMST-01 Action Plan Title: Student Access Desired Outcome: The Smyrna Center will streamline and increase its academic course and program offerings in order that Rutherford County students are able to complete degree requirements through the Smyrna Center, thereby eliminating and/or reducing the need to travel to the Moore County campus. Description of Action Plan and Related Activities: Every effort is made to offer courses in a timely basis so that a student can complete their graduation requirements in Smyrna if possible. Scheduling of classes considers the number of students that are required to take a course, the number of students in each major and available faculty and other resources such as proper labs and equipment. The majority of degrees that cannot be completed solely in Smyrna due to a lack of lab space involve Natural Science requirements. However, courses for all other degrees that can be completed in Smyrna are scheduled on either a yearly or biyearly basis. Team Members: Smyrna Center Staff Timeline: December 1, 2011 Est. Current Status: On Schedule Describe Progress: Fall 2011 Students at the Smyrna Center can take all courses for the Associate of Science Degree with emphases in Accounting, Business Administration, Business Education, Criminal Justice, Economics, Elementary Education, English, General Studies, Geography, History (HIST 2010, 2020, Motlow online, RODP online), Honors Scholar, Information Systems ( INFS 1010, 1250), Political Science (POLS 1030, 2010), Pre-Law, Psychology, Social Science (Social Work 2010 was taught in Smyrna for the first time in spring 2009 and has been offered at least once per year since that time) and the Associate of Science in Teaching. Students may also earn an Associate of Arts degree in English, General Studies, Geography, History (HIST 2010, 2020), Honors Scholar, Pre-Law, Political Science (POLS 1030, 2010), Social Science and Sociology. We also offer an Associate of Applied Science degree in Business Technology, Accounting, Business Management and Nursing, as well as Certificates in Business Information Systems, Computer Programming, Early Childhood Education, General Business and Microcomputer Information Systems. The Smyrna Center continues to offer evening courses Monday through Thursday and Saturday/Sunday throughout the day. Beginning spring 2012, Smyrna will offer an accelerated General Education course of study on Friday evenings and all day Saturdays, which will allow students to complete a maximum of five courses each for a Fall and Spring semester. Microbiology (lecture portion) will also be offered for the first time at Smyrna with the lab portion being taught at the McMinnville center due to the ongoing lack of lab space at Smyrna. Additionally, ITV classrooms are fully utilized in order to facilitate and support the expanded selection of courses in conjunction with other Motlow College locations. Plans remain underway for a second building. However due to unanticipated financial costs, construction has not yet begun. It is currently anticipated to begin spring 2012 with a completion date of early summer 2013. We are on target with this expected result. We are on target with this expected result. Describe Needed Changes: We will continue to monitor and evaluate our academic course curriculum and scheduling in order to meet student academic needs. It is anticipated that with the addition of a second classroom building in 2013, we will be able to offer a full range of academic courses.
