Course Information: For science majors. Current knowledge in the fundamentals of biology from the
molecular to cellular level of organization. General topics covered include basic biochemistry,
metabolism, energetics, cell structure, DNA, genetics, viruses, and bacteria. Lab required. Prerequisite:
Pass reading requirement of TSI; high school chemistry is recommended. 4 credit hours

Laboratory experiments will be mainly student participation, with some instructor demonstrations. Discussions of material covered in lab will precede or follow the lab topics. Films and other audio-visual materials
may be used.

Measurable student learning outcomes: Upon completion of this lab course students will be able to do the
following:
1. Describe the metabolic processes that occur within the cells
2. Compare eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell structure
3. Describe the process of cell replication
4. Explain how diversity is genetically based
5. Discuss natural selection.
6. Demonstrate the collection, analysis, and reporting of data using the scientific method
Course requirements:
This laboratory will have two comprehensive practical examinations, along with quizzes, lab reports
KEEP COPIES OF ALL WORK TURNED IN
Reports: Scientific assignment (20pts)and lab homework(80pts)
Attendance mandatory to turn in lab report and home work
Scientific assignment on Unit -7.The assignment will have to be typed.Grade for this will not be dropped/

Quizzes: 6 Quizzes(drop 1)(100 pts)
Quizzes are given the first 10 minutes of class. If you arrive late and you miss the quiz,
there are no make-up quizzes. If you makeup class with another instructor take the instructors quiz.
If no quiz is given then you lose those quiz points.
Permission must be granted by instructor to makeup a lab.
Entire reading of the lab units is required for quizzes
Lab-Exams: practical-1 – 50 points and practicals-2- 50 points
Must be taken the day scheduled. If you miss the practical a zero will be recorded.
If there is a medical emergency or death in the immediate family, documentation must be provided and
the instructor must be contacted immediately within 24 hrs. Failure to provide appropriate documentation
will result in a zero.
Method of evaluation: Lab accounts 25% and lecture accounts for 75%
Lab grade: : 20% of report, 20% of quiz , Practicals : 60%
.
Lab Policies and Procedure: No eating or drinking of any kind is allowed in the lab. Proper dress is
required at all times. This includes no open toed shoes. An instructor has the right to ask a student that is
improperly dressed to leave the lab or modify how they are dressed. Lab doors will be open 5 minutes
before lab and close 5 minutes into the lab, this in accordance with the fire safety rules
Attendance Policy: Laboratory attendance is mandatory. Students who stop attending class and do not
officially withdraw from the course will be assigned a grade of “F”. Lab must be completed and sign-out
sheet checked before leaving
Make-up Lab: Lab make-ups are only possible the week of the lab and the student must have prior
permission(e-mail 48hrs early) from me and the make-up lab instructor to attend another lab
Make-up labs are allowed only twice for the semester
Missed practicals:
If a student misses one of the practical exams, they must make-up the exam the same week in another
instructors lab, prior permission must be granted. Contact your instructor immediately within 24 hrs if you
fail to take one of the practical exams. Instructors cannot count one practical exam grade twice.

Lateral Transfer PolicyLateral transfers will not be granted after the 4th week
of class or after the first lecture exam, whichever comes first. Exceptions to this
are for documented changes in work schedule or family emergencies. If a
student does transfer to another section, all previous grades will accompany
the student. However, the new instructor can require the student to
retake any exam or quiz. For questions concerning this policy, contact the
Biology Department Chair.
Course Drop Limit Provisions: Texas Education Code 51:907
Students who enroll as an entering freshman or a first-time college student in undergraduate courses at any
Texas public community college, technical institute, health sciences institution, or any public university
offering undergraduate courses must comply with the legislation of TEC51.907.
TEC51.907 states that students who enroll for the first time during the fall 2007 semester, or any subsequent
semester, are subject to the course drop limit of six course drops. This includes any course a transfer
student has dropped at another institution. Collin College will not begin to count dropped course until the
fall 2009 semester. For more information, please contact Academic Advising or the Admissions and
Records Office on any campus.

7.2.3. Scholastic Dishonesty:
Every member of the Collin College community is expected to maintain the highest standards of academic
integrity. Collin College may initiate disciplinary proceedings against a student accused of scholastic
dishonesty. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, statements, acts, or omissions related to
applications for enrollment or the award of a degree, and/or the submission as one’s own work material that
is not one’s own. Scholastic dishonesty may involve, but is not limited to, one or more of the following
acts: cheating, plagiarism, collusion, use of annotated texts or teacher’s editions, use of information about
exams posted on the Internet or electronic medium, and/or falsifying academic records. While specific
examples are listed below, this is not an exhaustive list and scholastic dishonesty may encompass other
conduct, including any conduct through electronic or computerized means:
Plagiarism is the use of an author’s words or ideas as if they were one’s own without giving credit to the
source, including, but not limited to, failure to acknowledge a direct quotation.
Cheating is the willful giving or receiving of information in an unauthorized manner during an
examination; collaborating with another student during an examination without authority; using, buying,
selling, soliciting, stealing, or otherwise obtaining course assignments and/or examination questions in
advance; copying computer or Internet files; using someone else’s work for assignments as if it were one’s
own; or any other dishonest means of attempting to fulfill the requirements of a course.
Collusion is intentionally or unintentionally aiding or attempting to aid another in an act of scholastic
dishonesty, including but not limited to, failing to secure academic work; providing a paper or project to
another student; providing an inappropriate level of assistance; communicating answers to a classmate about
an examination or any other course assignment; removing tests or answer sheets from a test site; and
allowing a classmate to copy answers.
In cases where an incident report has been filed for alleged violation of scholastic dishonesty, faculty are
requested to delay posting a grade, for the academic work in question, until the Dean of Student’s Office
renders an administrative decision of the case. Students found responsible for scholastic dishonesty
offenses will receive an authorized disciplinary penalty from the Dean of Students Office. The student may
also receive an academic penalty in the course where the scholastic dishonesty took place. The professor
will determine the appropriate academic penalty.
In cases where an incident report has been filed for alleged violation of scholastic dishonesty, faculty are
