Registration fees alone cannot sustain the excellent scientific programs provided by the chapter without becoming prohibitive. We need corporate support to offer the quality educational programs that are so important for professional growth in our field. While many companies have often donated $1,000 or more, any contribution would be highly appreciated! Should you choose to do so, a check (made out to MRC/SOT) can be sent to the address for meeting registration indicated above. Contributions are accepted at any time during the year. On behalf of the MRC/SOT Executive Council, I thank you for your interest and support! Linda Tam Treasurer of the MRC-SOT 4 MRC/SOT SPONSORS 2005-2006 MRC/SOT THANKS THE FOLLOWING ORGANIZATIONS FOR THEIR ESSENTIAL SUPPORT! Covance Laboratories, Inc $3000 Young Investigator Award Sponsor Host of MRC/SOT Breakfast at the 2006 National SOT Meeting WIL Research Laboratories, Inc. $1500 Victor A. Drill Award Sponsor Charles River Laboratories Reid Patterson Consulting Robin Guy Consulting $500 $400 $100 We also extend a special “thank you” to TAP Pharmaceuticals, Inc., for hosting/sponsoring our 2005 Fall meeting. The MRC/SOT Welcomes Exhibitors to the Spring 2006 Meeting! Organizations are welcome to present their products and/or services during the luncheon meeting and at the evening reception that follows the afternoon program. The $300 fee for the exhibit includes the use of an eight-foot table with electricity. Please contact Robin Guy [rcg@robinguy.com] for more information. 5 LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR LOCAL SOT CHAPTER AT OUR WEBSITE Chapter newsletters, information pertaining to membership and MRC/SOT awards, and nomination/application forms may be viewed or printed from our website: http://www.toxicology.org/isot/rc/midwest/index.html PLEASE SUPPORT THE MRC/SOT WITH YOUR MEMBERSHIP! EXISTING MEMBERS - REMEMBER TO RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP! Please remember that the dues year begins on January 1st. Existing MRC/SOT members, please renew promptly after receiving instructions from the National SOT office. By keeping your membership in “good standing”, you will remain on the MRC/SOT email communication list maintained by the National office. National SOT members can simultaneously renew their National SOT and MRC/SOT memberships at the national SOT website [http://www.toxicology.org/]. Credit cards are accepted on the website. MRC/SOT members that are not National SOT members may also renew their memberships online. Please contact Rita Rose (sothq@toxicology.org) for instructions. Alternatively, you may contact the MRC/SOT Membership Committee chairperson (see below) to renew your dues. Not an MRC/SOT member yet? Consider joining today! The MRC/SOT is one of the largest regional chapters of the national Society of Toxicology, and we're still growing. Our large membership allows us the opportunity to deliver high quality, relatively inexpensive, local scientific meetings. Annual membership dues are still only $25, and one obvious advantage of membership is reduced meeting registration fees. More importantly, MRC/SOT membership offers invaluable opportunities to meet and interact with other area toxicology professionals. Membership application forms may be downloaded from our web page. HELP US ATTRACT NEW MEMBERS! Keeping membership at its current level requires a group effort. Our Membership Committee works hard to attract new members, but you can help by encouraging your colleagues to join as well. Please take the time to copy the membership application and circulate it to colleagues whom you think would benefit from MRC/SOT membership. Any questions regarding MRC/SOT membership may be directed to the Membership Committee chairman, Bill Johnson [wjohnson@iitri.org]. 6 ELECTION UPDATE - MRC/SOT EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE The results of the annual MRC/SOT elections will be announced at the Spring meeting lunch business meeting. Appointments to the 2006-2007 Executive Committee will be made for the following positions that will be vacant after this year: President-Elect Secretary Councilor (2) Nominations are accepted annually for vacant positions; these are announced in the MRC/SOT Fall newsletter. Nomination forms are available at the MRC/SOT website. Ballots for the election are sent out in late March by the National office. Members that are in good standing (i.e., current year’s dues paid; see above) will receive ballots electronically from the National SOT office. **MRC/SOT AWARDS** MRC/SOT is proud to recognize the efforts of toxicologists who work and study in the Midwest. There are three annual awards presented that the MRC/SOT uses to highlight their achievements: Kenneth P. DuBois Award (1982-present) Presented at the MRC/SOT Spring meeting to an outstanding toxicologist from the Midwest region. Nominations due April 1 Victor A. Drill Award (1989-present) Sponsored by WIL Research Laboratories, Inc. Presented at the Spring meeting to the student who presents the best poster. The winner receives a paid trip (expenses reimbursed up to $1500) to the following year’s National SOT meeting. Abstracts due May 1 Young Investigator Award (2003-present) Sponsored by Covance Laboratories, Inc. Presented to the student who submits the best research proposal prior to the MRC/SOT Spring meeting. The winner receives $1500 to put towards their proposed research project and presents their results at the following year’s MRC/SOT Spring meeting. Proposals due April 5 Information about the three awards, as well as application forms, are found on our website (http://www.toxicology.org/isot/rc/midwest/index.html). Any further questions may be directed to the Awards Committee chair, Bill Bracken [william.bracken@abbott.com]. 7 CONSIDER PARTICIPATING IN THE MRC/SOT COMMITTEES While the MRC/SOT elected executive committee officers are highly involved within the various standing committees, opportunities exist for MRC/SOT members to get involved. For more information on how you can get involved, contact the appropriate committee chair (see executive committee listing at the back of the newsletter). Program Committee: Would you like to see a particular topic presented at an MRC/SOT meeting? Do you know speakers that would be interested in presenting at a meeting? Consider working with the Program Committee to help maintain the high quality of scientific programs that the MRC/SOT has provided you through the years. Awards Committee: We have described the various MRC/SOT awards above. We generally receive many high-quality applications for each of the awards every year, making the decision an enjoyable challenge. You can assist in the review of applications and/or judging student posters at the Spring meeting. This committee also works to identify new ways to promote or improve the MRC/SOT awards. We also have opportunities for members to participate on the Membership, Nominations, Audit, and Communications committees. Contact the respective committee chair for more information. THE STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE Greetings Midwest Regional Chapter! My name is Kristina DeSmet and I have been chosen as the new Student Advisory Committee (SAC) representative for the MRC-SOT. Previously, Tisha King Heiden (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) served as the SAC representative. We would like to thank Tisha for her continued commitment to the MRC-SOT and wish her luck with her future endeavors. As an ad hoc committee of the national Society of Toxicology, the SAC was created to serve as a student liaison between the regional and national SOT chapters in order to encourage student involvement in SOT. If you are a student and have an active interest in toxicology, we encourage you to attend the next MRC-SOT meeting on May 12, 2006 at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort in Lincolnshire, IL. Even though you do not need to be a member of the Midwest Regional Chapter to attend the meeting or present a poster, there are several benefits to becoming a student member. Student members have access to several services provided by the MRC-SOT, are eligible for student travel awards such as the Victor A. Drill Award for best poster presentation and the Young Investigator Award for the most innovative research. You also benefit from networking with other scientists and potential employers at the regional meetings. Besides, membership dues are only $10! To become a member, download and fill out an application form from our website. Please feel free to email me with any questions. Hope to see you May 12th!
