Important things we need to know
Rick Maxwell distributed copies of a Brookhaven College Schools of the Arts flyer announcing
the presentation of Reduced Shakespeare Company “The Complete Works of William
Shakespeare (abridged)” on January 23. Rick is really encouraging students to attend. He is very
excited about this production.
Sam Govea reported that the Instructional Technology Council will present the award for
Outstanding eLearning Student of the Year to a student at its annual conference: eLearning 2010
Feb 20-23, 2010 in Fort Worth. He will forward the information to faculty.
Sam reported that eCampus training schedule is available. He will send a copy to the deans.
Sam also stated that those faculty who wish to teach online must take all four training sessions.
For those wanting training on grading, one session is needed. Rodger complimented Sam on his
presentations.
Rodger reported that he met with Social Science/World Languages division to finalize plans for
Michael Dennehy’s replacement for Social Science/World Languages. Rodger will meet with
faculty and staff on Friday, January 15, to discuss who will assume the responsibilities of the
dean’s office. Follow-up: Rodger met with the SS and WL division members. They will
discuss in their respective workgroups and Steve Link and Eileen Nelson will get back to
Rodger with the recommendations by Jan. 22.
Sandy Wyche was very complimentary about Bill Hammerschlag’s presentation on January 13 on
Learning Frameworks. The next session is scheduled for January 28.
Spring Registration Discussion
Brenda Dalton reported long lines in registration. She asked for additional DMAT and
Developmental Writing sections. Advisors are registering students at other campuses. Students
want morning classes. Brenda said it is difficult to talk students into taking other classes. There
was a discussion about payment for classes and how it impacts students. Community college
students have different issues than university students. Brenda will check with Collin County
College to see what billing practice they have in place.
Decision about later start times for evening classes
After discussion, the group agreed to have evening classes begin at 5:40 end at 7:00 p.m. and
begin at 7:10 end at 8:30 p.m. in fall 2010. “Unique” classes will build their own schedules.

Rodger also asked the deans to look at 8:30 p.m. enrollments. Follow-up: Rodger sent an e-mail
to the deans, Oscar Lopez, Richard McCrary, Curt Capetillo and Monica about this change in
scheduling.
Faculty Assistance with Registration
There was a discussion about faculty assistance at registration. Brenda stated that space for
individual faculty interaction with students during registration is a problem. Brenda believes
having faculty at registration can be a positive experience for students. Students will review the
advising process.
Professional Development Next Steps Using AtD Funds
Kendra brought a question she received to the group regarding next steps for those requesting
professional development activities. Rodger asked that all requests, with outline of what is being
requested, to him. He will bring to Marilyn Lynch. Doris Rousey reported that math department
requires their faculty to participate in professional development activities. Rodger would like to
see the deans design what they would like to see as part of their professional development
program.
Performance Hall Availability
Kendra asked Rick Maxwell about reserving the performance hall for an event. Rick’s response
was that the theater is actually used as a classroom for theater students. The theater is run by an
instructor. Other campuses with theater classrooms have a tech looking at their performance hall
availability. Rick complimented Jane Quetin on her work with the theater group. He did also
encourage deans to ask about using the performance hall.
Shared Associate Dean Concept
Kendra has been asked to inquire about the possibility of an Associate Dean position for
Communications, and perhaps sharing with another division. There was a discussion about the
possibility of either an associate or assistant dean to deal with issues in the division not
necessarily tied to instruction, for instance, grant writing. It was mentioned that one drawback is
budgetary. Another suggestion was a “visiting” administrator. Rodger would like to have future
discussions on this complex issue. Anne will research costs associated with assistant to the dean
contracts and release time. Follow-up: Rodger talked asked George to run some data on
assistance to the dean extra service and release time. George will attend a meeting with the
deans in the near future to look at the numbers.
Follett Bookstore is on the agenda for the January 21 meeting. Rodger will ask Lisa to invite
faculty council to the meeting. Follow-up: Rodger asked Dawn to let the Follett folks know
that this is going to be more of a question and answer session between for the deans and
faculty and the Follett reps.
Meeting adjourned at 3:50 p.m.
