Gonzaga University 2-Year and 5-Year Alumni Survey Summary Report
Prepared by Student Voice
February 2009
Purpose and Methods
The purpose of this study was to assess Gonzaga University’s alumni’s perception of Gonzaga, their
academic experience, civic engagement, and their overall experience at Gonzaga. The instrument
examined alumni’s overall experience with Gonzaga while they were students as well as their
experiences since graduation.
This instrument, a web-based questionnaire of 35 questions, was developed as a joint effort by Daniel
Bubb, Michael Herzog, Patricia Terry, Mary Heitkemper, and Jennifer Klein at Gonzaga University. The
data gained from this study were intended to inform decisions in several areas on campus for improving
alumni relations, marketing to prospective students, and improving services and programs for students.
Participants
For this study, 1520 Gonzaga alumni who graduated in 2003 or 2006 were invited to participate via
email with a link to the survey website in Fall 2008. Graduates from 2003 were selected because they
would have had time to find employment and/or pursue graduate school since graduating. Furthermore,
graduates of 2006 were selected because they would not be too far removed from their college
experience. The two graduation years were selected to provide a more comprehensive view of the
recent graduate experience.
The participants were asked to complete an online questionnaire via e-mail. A follow-up paper mailing
was also sent to increase response rate. The number of alumni who started the survey was 343, and 322
completed the survey. The total response rate was 22%. Of the alumni who participated, approximately
29% (n=99) graduated in 2003 and 71% graduated in 2006 (n=244).
Participants were asked to identify their major and their department. The range of majors and
departments was broad. The most represented majors were Business Administration at 17% (n=57),
Psychology at 7% (n=24), and Civil Engineering and Political Science both with 5% (n=18). The most
represented departments were Communication Arts with 10% (n=34), Business with 7% (n=25),
Psychology with 7% (n=23), and Biology with 6% (n=20) (for complete list of reported majors and
departments see Appendix A).
Results
I.
Overall Experience
Alumni were asked several questions that assessed their overall experience at Gonzaga. Largely, former
students responded very positively about their experience. A wide majority of 89% of alumni strongly
agreed or agreed that Gonzaga University met their expectations. Furthermore, 85% strongly agreed or
agreed that Gonzaga helped them achieve their goals. Alumni were also given the opportunity to
comment openly on their Gonzaga experience (for a complete list of responses see Appendix B). While
the individual responses varied, students commonly reported that they enjoyed their experience at
Gonzaga, and it prepared them well for life after college. Additionally, many commented on the changes
Gonzaga made while they were attending, such as new facilities, an updated marketing strategy, and
Campus Ministry. Many commented that they were easily able to find a career with their Gonzaga
education while many others reported frustration over having little help finding a job.
II. Perception of Gonzaga University
Three questions in the instrument focused on how alumni perceive Gonzaga as an institution. Overall,
81% of alumni strongly agreed or agreed that Gonzaga enjoys a reputation as an outstanding institution
of higher education. While the graduates from 2003 had a more favorable perception of Gonzaga than
2006 graduates, the difference was slight. About 84% of 2003 graduates strongly agreed or agreed that
Gonzaga has an outstanding reputation while 80% of 2006 graduates strongly agreed or agreed.
Respondents were also asked if they would recommend Gonzaga to prospective students. Overall,
alumni said they would recommend Gonzaga for undergraduate and graduate education (Table 2).
About 90% of respondents strongly agreed or agreed with the statement “I would recommend Gonzaga
University to family member, friends, or acquaintances for undergraduate education.”
The responses to the statement, “I would recommend Gonzaga University to family member, friends, or
acquaintances for graduate education,” were more varied with 23% of alumni selecting “Not
applicable.” However, 50% of the remaining respondents (n=250) strongly agreed or agreed with the
statement that they would recommend Gonzaga for its graduate education. While this is a much lower
percentage than the undergraduate recommendation, only 11% of respondents strongly disagreed,
disagreed, or somewhat disagreed that they would recommend Gonzaga’s graduate education. The
lower percentage of individuals agreeing with the statement is likely due to the fact that the alumni
surveyed were undergraduate students at Gonzaga. Therefore, they may not be as familiar with the
graduate program as the undergraduate program.

III. Civic Engagement
Two questions focused on alumni’s experience with service learning at Gonzaga and their volunteer
experiences since graduation. Overall, about half of participants took a service learning course while at
Gonzaga (52%). However, when this was separated by class year, over 58% of 2006 graduates
participated in service learning while only 36% of 2003 graduates took part. The difference in
percentage could be attributed to an expansion of a service learning program in recent years.
Furthermore, service learning could also be a more popular trend among recent students.
When volunteering behavior was examined, it was found that a greater percentage of 2003 graduates
volunteered since graduation than 2006 graduates. Overall, 80% of alumni indicated that they have
volunteered since leaving Gonzaga. When examined by graduation year, 84% of 2003 graduates and
78% of 2006 graduates have volunteered since graduation. The difference in percentage could be due to
the fact that 2003 graduates have had more time since graduation to participate in volunteer work.
Additionally, 2003 graduates may be more settled in their community and more invested in community
efforts.
Finally, participation in volunteer work after graduation was slightly higher for those who took a service
learning course. Overall, 83% of alumni who took a service learning course participated in volunteer
work later while 77% of alumni who did not take a service learning course served as a volunteer since
graduating. While there is a difference in percentages, it should be noted that a high percentage of nonservice learning graduates have participated in post-graduation volunteer work. In future studies, it may
be worthwhile to examine the level of involvement in volunteer work for students who participated in
service learning in comparison to those who did not participate.
IV. Evaluation of Academics
A. Course Content
Participants were asked to evaluate several areas of course content while they attended
Gonzaga. They were asked to assess the clarity of course evaluations, applicability of course
readings and activities, the intellectual challenge of courses, and the sufficiency of course
content. Overall, Gonzaga alumni rated the content of the courses positively with 70% - 85% of
respondents indicating that they strongly agree or agree with each of the the statements about
course content (Table 3).

B. Evaluation of Faculty
Respondents were also asked to evaluate their experience with Gonzaga faculty in several areas.
Alumni were asked to assess the accessibility of faculty, the nature of faculty feedback, the
quality of instruction, and support they received from faculty. Overall, alumni reported positive
experiences with faculty with 78% - 91% of respondents indicating that they strongly agree or
agree with each of the statements about faculty interaction (Table 4).

C. Academics and Career Preparation
Finally, alumni were asked to evaluate the effect of their academic program of study on their
career preparation. These questions specifically asked alumni to focus on their experience
within their major course of study. Alumni were asked to assess their professional preparation
and the usefulness of their major to their career.
Overall, participants agreed with statements that their course work helped them prepare for
their career. However, their evaluation of career preparation was not as positive as their
evaluation of their courses and faculty interactions. When “somewhat agree” responses were
included, the total percentage of individuals agreeing was much higher. It should be noted, that
most alumni did not disagree with the statements (7% - 11%); they just did not agree very
strongly (Table 5).

V. Career Outcomes
A number of questions in the survey assessed alumni’s experience finding employment after graduation.
Overall, alumni were able to find jobs quickly. Over 73% found a job within 6 months of graduation, and
33% found a job before they graduated. Since there were almost 19% of alumni who did not seek
employment after graduation, only 8% of graduates took longer than 6 months to find a job or still have
not found employment (Figure 1). When this data was compared by graduation year, a higher
percentage of 2006 graduates had found employment before graduation (37%) than 2003 graduates
(24%). However, the percentage of graduates who obtained employment within 6 months was more
similar across graduate year with 67% of 2003 graduates finding a job and 75% of 2006 graduates
finding employment.
Figure 1
How long after graduation did it take you to find your first job? (All respondents)
When asked about their current employment, 76% of graduates reported that they are employed fulltime. A higher percentage of 2003 graduates are employed full time (87%) than 2006 graduates (72%).
The difference in this number may be due to graduate programs that 2006 graduates are still completing
that 2003 graduates would likely have finished.
Respondents who indicated that they were employed full time were asked to provide the details of their
employment (Appendix C). Notable employers were Boeing (n=8), Gonzaga University (n=6), and the
Armed Services (n=6). About 44% of graduates are employed in Washington State. Of the alumni
employed in Washington, about 34% are employed in Seattle and 27% are employed in Spokane.
Finally, respondents with full-time employment were asked to report their current salary (Figure 2). The
most reported salary ranges reported were $30,000 - $39,999 (22%) and $40,000 - $49,999 (22%) for all
graduates. For 2003 graduates, the most frequent salary range reported was $40,000 - $49,999 (24%)
and the most frequent salary range for 2006 graduates was $30,000 - $39,999 (25%). The difference in
salary by class year could be attributed to 2003 graduates gaining more work experience than 2006
graduates. Since they have had more time to be employed since graduation, 2003 graduates have likely
had more opportunity for promotions and pay raises.

VI. Graduate School Outcomes
Alumni were asked to report on their post-undergraduate education. Overall, 49% of alumni have
attended or are currently attending graduate or professional school. Since graduation, 57% of 2003
graduates have enrolled in graduate or professional school, and 46% of 2006 graduates have
attended.
Respondents who indicated they had attended graduate school were asked to provide details about
their graduate education (Appendix D). Of the institutions alumni attended, 25% enrolled in a postundergraduate program at Gonzaga (n=39). Alumni reported a wide range of programs of study, but
notable programs were Law (13%) and Business (12%). About 62% of graduates reported that they
attended graduate school for a Master’s degree, and the remainder of students received other
degrees.
Finally, all students were asked if they were planning to attend graduate school in the future.
Overall, 59% of alumni reported that they were planning to enroll in a post-undergraduate program.
Of the respondents who plan to attend graduate school in the future, 36% reported that they had
attended or were currently attending graduate school (Figure 3). The majority of alumni who said
they plan to attend graduate school in the future said they would pursue a Master’s degree (70%),
and 17% said they would pursue a Ph.D.

Appendix B: Open-ended responses to: Please provide any additional comments to further explain or
describe your Gonzaga University experience:
1.
(1)I enjoyed my educational experience - most of my teachers were excellent educators, and I felt
they genuinely cared about my academic development. (2)I recieved no help, however finding a
job. After 4 years of biology classes and 1 year of business classes, I was over $30,000 in debt with
no career options. Even though I participated in GAMP, went to alumni socials, and worked with
the career center, I had zero job opportunities. Once I graduated, the university only contacted me
to ask for money. This was a very scary and frustrating experience. (3) Having been a part of the
athletic department for 5 years (4 as an athlete and 1 as a coach) I saw first hand the university's
perverted obsession with athletics. As a Jesuit university, I expected Gonzaga to be an exception to
the norm of collegiate athletics. Instead, I found abusive coaches, lying administrators, and top
university officials unwilling to take responsibility for the actions of their staff. The behavior of not
only the athletic department, but University administration, contradict Gonzaga's mission
statement. By the end of my 5 years at Gonzaga I was convinced the mission statement was
nothing more than a marketing tool.
2.
A lot changed at the University during my four years there. The dramatic turnover in
Campus/University Ministry, the massive jump in enrollment, the building campaign ("Why
Gonzaga?"), and the increasingly over-hyped men's basketball team were among the notable
changes. Upon graduation, I said to several people around me, "This is a very different place than it
was when I started." Some of the changes led to improvements, while many I could have done
without, i.e., the ones that involved power struggles or excessive (in my opinion) monetary outlay.
I wish I'd plotted out a 5-year plan for myself rather than a 4-year program, but I don't know if I
could have handled another year given all the changes that were going on. Now when talking
about GU to prospective/current students or parents, I urge them to consider GU, to make the
most of the many opportunities there in the best possible ways, and simply to be cautious of the
sort of pitfalls that impacted my experience so that theirs may be better.
3.
Amazing! But helping me get a job after graduation, there was no help.
4.
As a non-traditional student I feel the most important thing you could offer students in my age
group is the ability to take classes with like students in the non-traditional format of weekends,
evenings and on-line. My hope would be that you expand the program and offer more class
options. Non-traditional students are a growing population and the university should do more to
attract and keep them.
5.
As a whole Gonzaga was in a transitional phase between small regional college to a growing midsized college with a developing national reputation. As a result the University was in flux culturally
and academically. Many new facilities were being built while I was at the University and class sizes
and campus life experienced growing pains. My experience at Gonzaga was great because the
school was small and encouraged participation and involvement in a variety of activities. As a result
I participated in many organizations that really shaped my work ethic and beliefs. As a result I felt I
was well prepared for life beyond college.
6.
Ask anyone, I love Gonzaga.
7.
Attending Gonzaga was the best decision of my life.
8.
Best 4 years of my life.
9.
Campus Ministry, under the guidance of Fr. Watson and Fr. Ganz, was a large part of my positive
experience at Gonzaga. Furthermore, I was confident in the leadership of Fr. Spitzer as University
President, especially in enhancing the Catholic foundation of the university. Any hesitation in
recommending Gonzaga now stems from an uncertainty of what will occur with him gone. I found
that Gonzaga provided a quality education. I appreciate the emphasis on critical thinking and the
Jesuit principles. I hope it remains an academically rigorous institution that is enhanced by its
athletic success, instead of hindered.
10. Coming from a small high school I needed an institution with an intimate feeling, and Gonzaga
provided that, and much more. The education was first class, my time as the Kennel Club President
was amazing, and the friends I made will last a lifetime. I just hope that the university, with all it's
popularity, will not grow in number of students, but be more selective in the candidates they
accept.
11. Disappointed about the institutional fidelity to the teachings and mission of the Catholic Church.
The curriculum did not integrate the Catholic faith except as a matter of box-checking, and
professors who, by virtue of their dissent from the Magisterium, do not share the Catholic faith are
in positions of teaching and authority with respect to campus ministry and religion instruction.
Also, the classes were not particularly rigorous in the humanities, with a few exceptions. That being
said, student life was pretty good, I made a lot of friends, learned a lot, and met my future wife at
Gonzaga. But these admittedly very positive experiences are secondary to the purpose of a
university, which primarily is education, which happens in the classroom.
12. During my years at GU the nursing students were required to transfer to WSU to complete their
degree, I know this is no longer the case but my expericence was much shorter and limited because
of this
13. Excellent teaching and small class sizes, opportunity to meet one-on-one with professors for
assistance. Structured course schedule allowed me to graduate in 4-years in Computer
Engineering. Working with GAMP career services, I had several mentors, and GAMP provided me
with a contact of a Boeing manager, which led to my current gainful employment.
14. Excellent!
15. For me, Gonzaga defined the college experience I had imagined growing up... not 'a' college
experience, 'the' college experience. From surveying my acquaintances, this appears to be a rarity.
To most, college was nothing more than attending classes (and playing video games in the down
time).
16. For the most part, I believe I received a well-rounded undergraduate experience. I loved the values
that were instilled into my education, and believe I have a better view of "the big picture" after
receiving my degree. I am only disappointed in myself for not pursuing all the opportunities and
connections that Gonzaga provided while I was there.
17. Going to Gonzaga was the best decision I have ever made. The kids there are all well-rounded... not
necessarily #1 in the class but the kids that are good at school as well as sports as well as
socializing. It is just such a wonderfully warm and friendly community. I learned more than I could
ever begin to explain while attending this school, about life as well as academics.
18. Gonzaga in Florence is a wonderful program, I had a wonderful experience there educationally and
personally.
19. Gonzaga is a great place - but the school's reputation is lacking outside of Spokane/Washington
State. Coming from the California Bay Area, it would be better for students to have more
interaction with businesses/opportunities prior to graduation.
20. Gonzaga is a great place for individual growth through a closely knit community. It was just the
experience I was looking for from an academic, athletic, and spiritual perspective.
21. Gonzaga lived up to my expectations for a journalism major. Some of the courses I took were
essential to my learning, and working for the Bulletin for three and a half years was both one of my
favorite experiences and most important. Most important was my academic advisor who taught
me an amazing amount of life skills and professional skills, which I believe students at larger
universities do not get. On the other hand, I was less pleased by some of my fellow students'
behavior -- while some students were exemplar of doing great things for the community and being
selfless, there are other examples that come to mind that bother me. I was bullied freshman year,
and there were many students who saw college apathetically as a drinking opportunity. I know
how to have fun and I sure as heck was not positive choice, but it would have been nice to see the
heaviest partiers balance it out with more gumption toward volunteering. I attribute this to lack of
connection with these students to get them out there. I still would recommend this university for
any white student, though. (Maybe not so much for minorities as there is a less-known vibe among
black and Latino minorities that they felt marginalized because of the sheer number of white
students at the university.)
22. Gonzaga not only prepared me to go out into the world as a "person the world needs most," but it
also gave me lasting friends and memories that I will never forget.
23. Gonzaga not only provided me with a solid education to support my professional endeavors, but
has also shaped my presonality and morals to guide me through my personal and professional
experiences.
24. Gonzaga provided me a well-rounded eduacation. My degree, and more importantly my GU
experience, prepared me for success in life.
25. Gonzaga showed very strong support for the ROTC program, enabling cadets to focus on academics
without having to struggle financially as well.
26. Gonzaga University most definitely lived up to my expectations as a University with a strong
community and focus on quality education. I would recommend Gonzaga to anyone interested in
higher education.
27. Gonzaga University was the best decision I have ever made. I don't know if I can put in words what
my Gonzaga experience meant to me. I think it is the greatest university anyone can attend-It is a
place like no other. All of my friends from Gonzaga share these sentiments.
28. Gonzaga was a life-experience I will never forget. From making to new friends to attending
basketball games, I learned invaluable lessons in and out of the classroom. I would recommend the
University to any student considering attending college. I only wish I had more of a chance to be
involved with the Gonzaga community way over here in Albuquerque.
29. Gonzaga was amazing and one of the best experiences of my life. I feel that the education I
received was outstanding and definitely prepared me for my future.
30. Gonzaga's small class size and teacher's help had help me to succeed
31. Gonzaga's undergraduate program is fabulous, it's rankings for graduate education are not as
great.
32. Good times. Loved the basketball games. Had a few really good professors.
33. Great experience, great school! Wish that we would have used the ACI code in concrete design
course but otherwise pleased overall.
34. great people, professors willing to spend time with you, committed to students
35. Greatest years of my life were spent at GU. I learned volumes at the hands of capable and
memorable professors. My younger brother is now a Sophomore at GU and is equally in awe of the
school. It's not really just a school, I suppose. It's a life-changing experience that has forever
shaped me and has a deep place in my heart.
36. GU was a great place and communinity to be a part of during my college career. I loved every
minute of it and am proud to be an Alumni.
37. GU was one of the most fun, challenging, and educational experiences of my life. I loved all 4 years
I spent in my undergrad education and wouldn't change anything.
38. I absolutely loved my experience at Gonzaga and consistently share this with friends, family, and
hopefully potential future Zags.
39. I am currently a graduate student at a large research institution, and I'm not sure that (for most
majors) Gonzaga can prepare students in the same way as a large state-funded institution. Also, I
think GU should focus its resources on the undergraduate experience.
40. I am so lucky to have attended GU. I am the biggest advocate to those considering attending and
greatly miss the campus, student, and professors. My experiences and education from Gonzaga
have enriched my life.
41. I am very proud to call myself a Gonzaga alum!!!
42. I attended as an undergrad, and have wholeheartedly recommended GU to others. I would also
recommend GU grad programs, eventhough I have not experienced those programs first hand.
43. I attended Gonzaga for the exceptional financial aid package I received and the small class sizes.
GEL weekend also helped me confirm my decision to go to Gonzaga.
44. I came in as a transfer student, and the university along with the students were very welcoming.
45. I can't quite put into words how wonderful my experience was. I was challenged academically,
made incredible relationships that have continued to bless my life nearly three years after
graduation. The school welcomed and matured me spiritually... it was once-in-a-lifetime
experience that I woudl repeat anyday.
46. I definitely valued my education but the community atmosphere, friends and life experiences I had
at Gonzaga are what made me who I am today.
47. I did not decide to attend Gonzaga for its Jesuit tradition, but it turned out that the Jesuit tradition
of leadership, academics, and service had the biggest impact on my life so far.
48. I did not experience graduate education at Gonzaga
49. I enjoyed my time at Gonzaga immensely. I felt very supported by almost all faculty and staff that I
had the opportunity to interact with (Jesuits included, of course!). The community that exists there
is unparalleled.
50. I enjoyed the feeling of community at GU. I always felt welcomed.
51. I enjoyed the holistic education that Jesuit education provided.
52. I enjoyed the sense of community and I still value community service and helping others.
53. I feel that the education and professors at GU are of very high quality and I am proud to say that I
am a graduate of the university. The classes I took in my major were excellent and I was suprised to
be just as excited about the core classes. I appreciate the philosophy and religion classes I took and
have drawn on what I learned from them many times since graduation. There are several
professors that stand out in my mind too and I am often reminded of their genuine care and
authentic presence in the classroom.
54. I found the career center to lack any type of assistance for biology students. They seemed to
assume that everyone was interested in medical school.
55. I found the education to be thorough and practical. The professors took a personal interest in my
success. The students as a whole were very inclusive and there was a real sense of community.
56. I get so much junk mail and correspondance asking me to donate to the school. After not
responding to any of the mailings, I asked to be removed from the mailing list, which I apparently
was not, because I still receive junk mail. I think it is inappropriate to send donation requests to my
place of work.
57. I had a great experience as an undergraduate at Gonzaga until it came time to find a job. I felt that
Gonzaga does a great job helping students from the school of business, school of education, and
the engineers... but as for the rest of us undergrads from the school of arts and sciences, we had to
jump through hoops to find a job that might allow us to use our degrees.
58. I had a great experience with no regrets. I made friendships to last a lifetime. The people are what
defines the Gonzaga experience as extraordinary.
59. I had a great time at GU. However, after attending a Jesuit high school, I was suprised to find
Gonzaga less rigorous academically than I anticipated.
60. I had a wonderful experience at GU. I found my best friends there. I also got to live in Italy too!
61. I had an incredible time at Gonzaga. Words cannot describe the experience and the life changing
time I had at Gonzaga.
62. I have recommended GU to family and friends who are now attending, and I returned for my
masters degree. I think one of the strongest points to attend GU is the quality level of eduction
that you earn, while also being able to receive a decent financial aid package. GU makes
themselves competetive financially with state schools because of some much more financial aid. If
this was ever lost, I think the school would sadly just be a school for the rich.
63. I have recommended many people to Gonzaga and it brings me great joy to see them now having
an experience like I had. Only those of us that know can really understand. I feel blessed that
Gonzaga nurtured me and enabled me to pursue what I love while also receiving a fantastic
education. Even after attending Notre Dame for graduate school, Gonzaga remains the foundation
of my adult identity. That identity is one that cares deeply about fullness of mind, body and spirit,
and craves to do good in the world. As crazy as it sounds, I pay my student loan bills with fondness.
I am ever grateful.
64. I hope Gonzaga continues to have what I only came to fully appreciate after graduation; that is, a
comfortable atmosphere which nurtures challenges, friendships, enthusiasm, critical thinking, and
the cultivation of constant self-examination and outward growth toward others. I would never be
the person I am today without my Gonzaga experience, and I don't think most alumni even realize
how special those years were until far later down the road. I hope that tradition continues.
65. I like the small classrooms and getting to know the professors and students in the School of
Business. All of the group assignments were frustrating at times, but helps students prepare for the
work world. The required philosophy and religion classes were beneficial to me to become a more
well-rounded individual.
66. I liked GU as a whole. I liked the core curriculum. My business degree was not very challenging. I
did get value from the Hogan Program and GAMP. I would not recommend GU because Fr. Spitzer
was a big part of me choosing the school and with him leaving I think that the school is going to
loose a large part of its Catholic identity. Please prove me wrong.
67. I love Gonzaga. I love the campus, staff, faculty, academics, and athletics. I participated in as much
as I could while at Gonzaga in Student Life and enjoyed so much that Gonzaga offers.
68. I Love GU!
69. I loved being part of the University Ministry group - Search, Agape, Cardoner, etc.
70. I loved Gonzaga and the sense of community it provided. Not too big, not too small. I had very
skilled professors, took interesting classes, and made great friends. I will always look fondly on my
time spent there.
71. I loved GU and am so thankful for every experience I had, especially the opportunity to study in
Florence.
72. I loved it!
73. I loved the friendly atmosphere and academic experience. I can think of no better place to discover
yourself than at GU. My friends and experiences will remain with me for all my life.
74. I miss all the service learning projects, social events, beautiful campus, great Spokane weather,
Centenial trail, sporting events, U.Ministry
75. I now live in Texas, and very few people know of anything other than Gonzaga basketball. I wish
the GU were more nationally known.
76. I only attended my senior year as an undergraduate and wish I could have gone all four years!
77. I participated in Gonzaga-In-Florence Program 2001-2002. Never could have imagined what a great
experience it would be. I will never forget those wonderful 9 months.
78. I really enjoyed my time there.
79. I really enjoyed the experience, but wish the engineering classes weren't so early in the morning!
80. I really like the fact that professors stay in contact with their students and are willing to assist them
with advice and such after they have moved on.
81. I really loved the smaller class sizes and the attention I was able to get from all of my professors.
82. I received a Master Degree in Leadership and Communication. During this process I enrolled in
online courses as well as in class courses. The online courses were NOT up to the standard as the in
class courses. They were not well managed, nor well organized. The curriculum was OK. It
concerned me that someone outside of Spokane was receiving the same degree as I was and they
did the whole thing online. I felt like the degree was too easily obtained by some.
83. I regard my memories of Gonzaga University as some of the best I have ever had. I'm so fond of the
school that I will be returning to get married at Gonzaga next summer.
84. I strongly believe that the post-secondary education system in America is broken. Students are
charged far too much for what they learn in colleges and universities. In the end government
financial aid and alumni donations end up supporting many students. As a powerful leader in the
academic world I hope that Gonzaga will evaluate ways to teach students what matters in the
working world while continually reducing the cost. Education is what separates the U.S. from the
rest of the world and we are quickly falling behind.
85. I think Gonzaga is a great liberal arts school. I came in with an undecided major. Had I known that
I'd eventually pick journalism, however, I would have attended a school with a better journalism
program. While I'm glad to have taken core curriculum classes, I don't believe I received the best
education in my major.
86. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Gonzaga. I would highly recommend either the
undergraduate or graduate programs to anyone.
87. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Gonzaga. The one thing I would have changed was to actually have
an advisor in my field of study. Mine was not involved, nor educated, on the major of public
relations and this caused me to stumble at a couple points in my educational career. Help was easy
to find, but I would have preferred someone who was knowledgeable and dedicated to me,
personally.
88. I truly am not convinced that I got my money's worth out of my education. I think, for my degree,
my money would have been better spent at EWU or WSU. While the depth of knowledge among
the psyc professors was outstanding, looking back, I think that the programs offered by EWU - in
the area of practical experience and application of classroom knowledge, would have better set me
up for success after graduation, and shown me what I could actually do with my degree. It would
have been a better use of my money.
89. I truly enjoyed my experience while attending GU. The skills I obtained are invaluable. I am so
grateful to still be a part of the community.
90. I was a transfer student and thoroughly enjoyed my time at Gonzaga.
91. I was confused with what I would be doing with my life when I entered GU, the day I left I was even
more confused.
92. I was extremely happy with the entire Gonzaga experience from academics to student life. My
reccomendation is to improve Gonzaga's Career Services. It is one area that could use some more
attention when comparing Gonzaga to other institutions.
93. I was in the biology department for the first year and a half of my education. I found that the
biology department is geared primarily for pre-med purposes. Students, like myself, who were
hoping to be able to use the biology program to teach will find themselves sorely dissapointed.
Also, your education program as an undergraduate program is slightly weak. Your best educational
program is your Special Education Program. I think that Gonzaga, with it's program of excellence
and for helping others within the community, would benefit greatly from a Master or Arts in
Teaching Program (MAT) that Education Undergraduates could move into after graduation. I would
also like to add that I am very supportive of the theatre arts, but am concerned that the University
is putting a band-aid on the Theatre. There are some huge safety issues in that space that need to
be addressed.
94. I wish everyone could experience Gonzaga. It was such a blessing in my life.
95. I would not recommend Gonzaga to any one I care about, because it is a strongly homophobic
environment. A family friend of mine just entered as a Gonzaga freshman, and I recently found out
he's gay, so I worry about him all the time. I know Gonzaga is a bad place for him to be, where the
people in his dorm will make fun of him, the administration will not support him, and his
classmates will try to use the Catholic faith as a weapon against the way God made him. I would
never donate money to Gonzaga, or speak positively of it to any potential applicant, until it stops
allowing student groups to sponsor (with student funds) hateful speakers attacking the students
who need God's help the most.
96. I would rate the English dept. higher than the Education dept. Overall with some exceptions - Jonas
Cox for example, was excellent.
97. I'm sure the grad programs for liberal arts programs are fine, but the sciences which I'm familiar
with don't have anything worth attending.
98. It helped me prepare very well for graduate school. The Biology professors were all very supportive
and beneficial. I recommended to my sister-in-law to start school there this fall 2009.
99. It was a priceless experience that will continue to define my career, personal development and
relationships. I've connected with many important people because of it.
100. It was one of the most amazing, fulfilling experiences of my life. It definitely surpassed any
preconceived expecations. I am A ZAG FOR LIFE!
101. Its a family like atmosphere that is very welcoming all over campus, the community and the city of
Spokane in general. I felt at home my 4 years in school. It was wonderful. Plus the Bulldog Tavern
helped me deal with any stress the came around. :)
102. Just from my experience, Gonzaga is not as well known for being an outstanding law-school or
other professional school besides the MBA program. In addition, until Spokane updates it's job
opportunities I do not feel there is much to offer "professionals"
103. Like any school, it has its positive and negative aspects. It's not for everyone, but it can be right for
some. As far as cultural experience, it is lacking. As far as academics, I think its got something to
offer.
104. loved every minute
105. Loved it!!
106. Loved the people, the environment, the focus on service, athletics, size, focus on faith, and the
smooth running operation of the school admin in general.
107. Met lifelong friends and received a great education.
108. My decision to attend GU was one of the best decisions I ever made - I am so grateful for my
educational experiences at GU.
109. My education from GU has served me well in my career path and my commitment to social justice.
It was worth every penny.
110. My educational experience was amazing....great professors for the most part and good class sizes
so you could receive extra help from professors if needed. My professors actually knew who I was
without having to look at a list of names in front of them. The Gonzaga community was also
incredibly supportive and fun.
111. My experience at Gonzaga still deeply influences me. Currently pursuing an advanced degree, it is
my hope to some day return to GU to teach. Beyond that, as a current student in a large state
institution, I feel even more privileged to have had the intimate and rigorous educational
experience that I enjoyed at GU. I have always strongly recommended GU to anyone considering
attending, and will continue to do so, as well as remain--to the best of my ability--involved in the
GU community. I wish, as a student who made rather fast progress on my BA, that Gonzaga offered
a wider variety of graduate programs and opportunities, so that I may have done more advanced
work, or post-bac there. However, overall, the experience is one that, having moved into the wider
world, I am daily amazed at how much it positively impacts my life.
112. My experience at Gonzaga University truly helped me to develop my entire self and it put into
motion the events that have since shaped me into a person that I respect. Gonzaga not only met
my expectations, but it exceeded any experience I could possibly imagine. I love who I am today,
and I love who I will become, but I love Gonzaga University for helping me to become who I am.
113. My experience at Gonzaga was easily the best 4 years of my life. I learned more about myself, my
faith, what I want in life and what it takes to get those things than I ever thought possible. The
experiences I was fortunate enough to have as a part of the Gonzaga community will continue to
shape the rest of my life. Zag for Life is not just a tagline, it's a commitment and more importantly,
a promise to remain a part of the community that has shaped the person I am today.
114. my experience at GU was amazing and met the best people who I am life-long friends with. GU will
help students strive to achieve their biggest dreams. I would recommend GU to anyone who will
listen!
115. My experience was completely made by the Honors Program. It fostered an environment of
enthusiastic learning, far more so than the other classes I took. Between the students, Fr. Clancy
and the teachers, I have nothing but praise for the program. I know I'm not alone in saying that it's
the top reason my experience at Gonzaga was worthwhile.
116. My experience was exceptional up until my senior thesis class. Due to the poor experience in that
class, it completely turned me off to the whole field of Criminal Justice. I would also have been nice
to have more hands on style classes instead of all research based classes. Not everyone wants to
do research for a living.
117. My experience was fine although I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of diversity on the
campus.
118. My experience was overall quite positive. I had a very hard time adjusting to college life as a
freshmen, but I slowly found my way. I had a lot of expectations, and I am disappointed at myself
for not taking advantage of many of the opportunities that were offered to me at the time. It
would be accurate to say that I have a lot of mixed emotions about my undergraduate education at
Gonzaga, but the school is hardly to blame for those feelings. Again, overall it was a positive
experience.
119. My four years at Gonzaga helped me to truly develop a strong ethical foundation that is still very
much a part of who I am 5 and a half years after graduating. I will always be thankful to Gonzaga
for being able to provide such a valuable experience.
120. My four years at Gonzaga were wonderful and I wouldn't trade my time there for anything in the
world. Because of the education and experience I received at Gonzaga I am now a well rounded
successful professional and human being.
121. My Gonzaga experience was amazing!! I met wonderful people and was taught by intelligent,
caring individuals who were truly interested in my whole education. A prime example of how
Gonzaga rises above the competition took place during my freshman year. My father passed away
suddenly during the first week of classes, and my family requested a priest be present when they
called to tell me the news. Father sat with me while I was given the worst news of my life. Being
from Kansas, and having only been at GU for a matter of days, I really knew no one outside of my
roommates and I was very sad. My roommates sat up with me all night long eating pizza and
talking about my dad--they sat with me, cried with me and helped me through the hardest night
I've ever had. A few short hours later (4:00 a.m.) I left for the Spokane airport to board a plane
home. My ENTIRE door was covered in cards from RA's, organizations, campus departments, etc. It
was an incredible outpouring of support which I will never forget. Reading through those cards I
knew Gonzaga would forever hold a very special place in my heart and the next four years didn't
disappoint. Gonzaga will always be a treasured time in my life, and I thank you for all you do.
122. My time at Gonzaga has been something that I constantly look back on with pride, not only for the
overall experience I had while attending, but also because of the ways it continues to effect my life
today. I wouldn't trade it for the world. Zag for life!
123. Not just a school with a great basketball team. Great professors and enviornment to make the
most out of your college education.
124. One PhD and a few masters degrees (MBA etc.) does not "graduate education" make.
125. Professors were generally excellent. Good social atmosphere--enjoyed being with other Catholics
my own age. The choirs were good, and the music department were very helpful and
accommodating. The liberal arts background provided by the history, English, and philosophy
classes has been helpful in my graduate school education, however, the requirements of the music
department were not adequate preparation for graduate school in my field (musicology).
126. Professors were high quality. Business curriculum was well planned and executed. Business writing
course in particular was valuable. Highly disappointed in GAMP Program.
127. Psychology Department is lacking in networking opportunities for grads.
128. Some departments at Gonzaga are much better than others. I would strongly recommend Gonzaga
to any potential undergraduate who was determined to major in philosophy, for instance.
129. The acedemic departments were awesome. The athletic department was awesome. The people
that ran student life were terrible, discriminatory and basically created a terrible experience at GU
for 2 years. Once off campus and they no longer had control then things were fine.
130. The Broadcast Studies program is amazing. Thanks mostly to Dan Garrity, I am where I am today.
For my job, I mean.
131. The multi-dimensional education - service, faith, academic, athletic, social - I got from Gonzaga has
been helpful both in terms of my personal life and in my business endeavors as well.
132. The ONLY reason I did not transfer away from Gonzaga was the Honors program. This program is
the most amazing, incredible, and worthwhile thing that Gonzaga has to offer. Period.
133. The people at Gonzaga are very friendly, helpful and sociable which made my experience
wonderful. I had many excellent professors as well. I believe that the University was good when it
was small, but felt as though it were growing too quickly by the time I graduated. I am glad I
attended when I did.
134. Undergraduate philosophy core was intensive and intentional. School of Education still needs some
work to improve leadership, organization, and direction. I left Gonzaga to pursue my graduate,
teacher-education elsewhere.
135. Unforutnately, while Gonzaga has raised the GPA scores and SAT scores of the incoming class, it
has become too selective and locked out students who may not have been at the top of the class,
but were committed to receiving a Jesuit education. Gonzaga needs to recruit more students who
are bright, but not necessarily 4.0 students.
136. What I loved about Gonzaga was the Special Education program. The professors made me who I
am and taught me everything I do now every day.
137. While my overall experience at Gonzaga was a good one, the experience was a conservative one-socially but namely academically.
138. wonderful.
139. Wouldn't trade it for anything. The combination of the University's atmosphere and foundations,
coupled with the guidance I received fromt he rowing coaches formed a solid foundation for
beginning a young adult life.
