Listening
1. My mom makes the best lasagna. Maybe you’ve never heard of lasagna. It’s a pasta dish that you bake.
It has ground beef, maybe three different kinds of cheese, and a lot of tomato sauce. You can get it at
most Italian restaurants, but, to tell the truth, my mom makes the best.
2. One great meal that you can never get in a restaurant is seafood stew. You know what I mean. Lean,
small piece of fish, mussels, and shrimp in soy sauce with onions and garlic, mixed together with basic
vegetables like potatoes and carrots. It’s the best kind of home cooking! I’m getting hungry right now
just talking about it.
3. A good potato salad is perfect for a Sunday afternoon picnic. My sister is great at making it. I know she
puts in mayonnaise, but what else? Oh, chopped celery! And shredded lettuce and chopped onion. Oh,
of course, potatoes!
4. The most basic Mexican food is tacos! I can’t believe you’ve never had ’em before. You put chopped
chicken or ground beef in the taco shell. Then you put shredded lettuce and chopped tomatoes on top.
Tacos are the easiest thing in the world to make. Don’t forget the shredded cheese.
Further Listening
1. A: You ready to go out to eat?
B: Wow. Yeah, look. It’s already noon.
A: How about that place we saw on the way to work? You know, the place with no meat?
B: OK, yeah, I want that lunch special with rice and vegetables.
A: Uh huh.
B: Because I don’t eat vegetables so often.
2. A: We really don’t have time to stop for a sandwich, do we?
B: Sorry, no. Can you run into that convenience store?
A: Alright, I’ll just get some sweet bread and maybe a piece of fruit…
B: That sounds good.
A:…because it’s cheap and light, OK?
B: That’ll do for a little snack.
3. A: After that meal, I want to eat something sweet.
B: How about some chocolate ice cream?
A: Chocolate sounds good but I feel like a bit of cake.
B: …because it’s rich and delicious.
A: Aren’t we supposed to be on a diet?
4. A: Which do you want, chicken soup or tomato soup?
B: I don’t care. It doesn’t matter. Just get me some soup.
A: But you haven’t eaten all day. Don’t you have an opinion about what you want to eat?
B: I don’t have an opinion! I just have a bad cold.
A: OK. I’ll get you the chicken soup because my mom says it’s healthy.
B: Fine. Thanks.

A: That’s too much. If we eat too much, we’ll get sleepy.
C: Yeah, let’s eat something juicy.
B: Juicy? OK, gimme an example of a fuicy food.
A: Fruit, of course. Look they’ve got pineapple and mango and strawberries…
C: Strawberries!
A:… and papaya shakes and bananas. Fruit is good because it’s healthy and tasty.
C: I don’t think so. We need a meal, not a snack.
B: I want to get something spicy.
