REVIEW 感想
In year 3, ERP has been introduced into our course. I have come across ERP in other
subjects, but we only been taught about its benefit and the usage. We do not really understand
how it works except knowing that it helps to integrate all the information in the company
regardless which department the information comes from. It provides a more effective an
efficient environment to the company. It also helps to reduce the company’s cost. In this year, we
are lucky to have this course been taught to us. It will act as an advantage to students in the
future especially in job searching.
Our ERP teacher has assigned an assignment for us so that we can have a deeper
understanding about how ERP works and benefit a company. I only have my eyes on the topic
about “How ERP works in logistic and delivery company”. We have learned the basic operation
of ERP like insert the code for the products setting up seller’s and buyer’s profile. But I want to
learn more how it really helps the logistics company to operate smoothly. With this idea in my
mind, I went on internet to search for the article I want. Effortlessly, I found an article I favor.
This article’s title is “ERP and Warehouse Management”. The article is a piece of
information of DHL. Deutsche Post (DHL) is the global market leader in the logistic industry.
They provide international express mail services. They commit their expertise in international
parcel, express, air and ocean freight, road and railway. Besides that, they also provide
warehousing solution from packaging, to repairs, to storage and other customized logistics
services. The reason I picked this article is because the topic interests me and it provides the
information in details. Besides that, it also features a graph showing the function of an ERP
solution provided by SAP.
Due to their company’s important core business process is the “fast and precise retrieval,
integration and collection of information”, that’s why ERP plays an important role in their
company. With the help of ERP, company can effectively collect every single data model for all
company-relevant information and all the information can be integrate by it. ERP has been
through evolution few times to suit the rapid increasing demand of the company. With the help
of the latest ERP, most of the essential business process can be covered. The execution of the
business process can be supported in real time, which means a system working in real time
makes it possible to immediately react to external events. One example is a tracking system for
shipments that enables the customer to see where his freight is at the moment-or we can say, IN
REAL TIME.
In this article, I come across a new technical term which called “Advance Planning
System (APS)”. Some might recognized it by the name of “Advance Planning and Scheduling”,
it is a system that supports the solution of primarily operative planning problems in SCM,
logistics and operation management with the help of quantitative solution methods (Operation
Research methods). It can also represent an extension of the ERP in terms of relationships with
other companies. APS uses data managed by ERP system. APS helps to extend the capabilities
of the widely used ERP system which provide only very limited planning support. This is an
important system for DHL who is a big company dealing with lots of companies and clients. It
can helps in facilitating fast responses.
Warehouse management which is the main topic in this article is an evolutionary step
from the inventory management system) IMS used in 1980s and early 1990s.When it comes to
logistics and delivery sector, warehouse management is a critical, important criteria. Warehouse
is like the heart of the company. If anything goes wrong, the whole company operation will stuck.
This is why warehouse management system (WMS) been created to manage the warehouses of
the company. WMS is a software application that supports the day-to-day operations in a
warehouse. It is a system that can be standalone. It is a system which diverges from the ERP
system. It helps the company to centralized management of tasks such as tracking inventory
levels and stock location. WMS can be used with other high-end technology such a RFID, voice
recognition and so on. The goal of this system is to provide information to help in efficient
control of the movement of materials within the warehouse. The implementation of WMS is
often complex. That’s why it required experienced and high-skills staffs to operate it. Although
most WMS implementations will reduce labor costs in the placement and removal of materials,
there is often an added warehouse management function required just to operate the software.
Despite the complexity, WMS systems do offer businesses considerable significant benefits. Not
only will placement and removal cycle times be reduced, but inventory accuracy will be
improved. This is in addition to increased storage capacity, increased organized storage of
materials and greater flexibility of warehouse operations.
I have learned new ERP knowledge by reading this article. It does open my eyes to the
whole new level of ERP system. It widened my knowledge toward ERP.I am so amazed how
useful ERP system can be. Most of the business is the globalization business. I can’t imagine
how a company can operate without the help of ERP. I have also acknowledged the cost of
implementing an ERP system. I guess the company needs to have enough financial budgets only
they can have the ability to implement this system. ERP is not just a system which helps the
company dealing with massive information. In this competitive business environment, it has also
becomes a company’s competitive advantage.
