Basic Info On Mussels
• What is a Mussel? It is a bivalve mollusk that is apart of the clam
family
• They are found in both freshwater and saltwater habitats.
• They have a shell whose outline is somewhat elongated and
asymmetrical compared with that of many other edible clams, the
shells of which are often more or less rounded or oval in shape
• most of which live on exposed shores in the intertidal zone
• The external color of the shell is often dark blue, blackish, or brown,
while the interior is silvery
Fresh Water and Salt Water
Mussels
• Freshwater mussel of the netherlands.
• Saltwater mussels found right here on long island!
Blue Mussles
• Blue mussels are found on the North America and
Europe and other polar waters around the world
• Blue mussels live in intertidal areas attached to rocks
and other hard substrates by strong (and somewhat
elastic) thread-like structures called byssal threads
• They are the most often type of mussels eaten around
the world!

Zebra mussels get their name from a striped pattern which is found on their
shells
They are usually about the size of a fingernail, but can grow to a maximum
length of two inches
