System Requirements Document
• Living document (4 versions during System Design phase)
– Intended to guide design
– Avoids specific design or implementation solutions
• Science requirements
– Science Performance requirements
• Includes assumptions about seeing & telescope environment
– Science Instrument requirements
– Shows flowdown from Science Case Requirements Document
• Observatory requirements
• Requirements by discipline
– Optical, mechanical, electronics/electrical, safety, software, interface,
reliability, spares, service & maintenance, documentation
– Should show flowdown from Science & Observatory requirements
• Separate “Instrumentation Baseline Document”
– More generic set of requirements applicable to all Keck instruments
– These are not repeated in the SRD

Functional Requirements Document
• Living document (4 versions during System Design phase)
– Intended to guide design
– Provides source for compliance matrix against which design &
delivered systems will be tested
– Makes assumptions about specific design or implementation
choices
• Divided up by major subsystems
– Requirements for all subsystems section
– Major subsystems: AO system, laser facility, science operations,
telescope facility, deployable IFU, imager/spectrograph, IFU
– Same breakdown as for SRD under each subsystem
• Optical, mechanical, electronics, etc.
• Flow down from SRD to subsystems (& major components)
should be shown
