Position Description: Academic Skills Tutor

Salary: $8.40/hourly
Work Study Eligible (Not required)
Hours per Week: Flexible, 5-20 hours/week
Academic Skills Tutors will work flexible work hours that can vary from morning shifts to evening shifts.
The THINK TANK serves as the central academic support center on our campus. It is our goal to assist students
in becoming independent learners. The Academic Skills Tutoring program was developed to help students expand
their study skills and organizational strategies to become more academically successful. As students themselves,
academic skills tutors serve as role models for the campus with their ability to model the strategies and techniques
that they teach other students about. This program works on a drop-in and appointment basis and is open to all
students on campus.
Responsibilities:







Present academic skill workshops for campus community.
Maintain certification through the College Reading and Language Association as a Mentor.
Build and maintain rapport with incoming students on a drop-in or appointment based basis providing
guidance and support to assist in college transition and improvement of study skills/habits.
Discuss skills such as college-level time management, study strategies, successfully maneuvering the
university environment and related topics.
Promote The THINK TANK unit and services to students through video presentations, visits to campus
organizations and classrooms as well as one-on-one student interaction.
Create materials such as bulletin boards, handouts, and/or other products to promote student academic
success; distribute information to the UA community.
Other duties as assigned by Graduate Assistant and Academic Skills Coordinator.
Qualifications:





Current UA student (preferred completion of at least 24 hours of UA course work) with an interest in
helping other students develop study skills and acclimate to college level coursework.
Possession and maintenance of at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Highly dependable and punctual.
Commitment to creating a welcoming and positive environment and sensitive to student diversity.
Must be available for mandatory trainings in August and January.
