17. If UConn were to make improvements to the teacher preparation program what would be the most important
thing for them to improve? Why? (7 Responses)
Try to make education classes more accessible to music education majors.
Music Education faculty need to be more diligent about clinical observations, as well as staying consistent
across the board with student expectation. Some of the faculty changes in our major have attributed to
many of the issues our class had; some of the instructors did not have the teaching skills or content
knowledge or to teach a college level course. I am also disappointed to know that some of the most highly
regarded professionals in the field are no longer going to be teaching future music educators.
To add a course for classroom management, and to instruct education classes IN THE MANNER and WITH
THE PHILOSOPHIES that we as educators are expected to use for our students
Differentiating learning for the music students and making sure that the material is accessible to all
students regardless of their primary focus or subject area.
Make the content apply to our area specific majors. Many times, I felt left out and couldn't relate the
material to my content specific area.
9
Make the education classes (i.e. EDCI, EPSY, etc) relate more to music. IF THEY CANNOT, then give music
majors separate classes with similar content so that they can get the most out of those classes.
Combine Music Ed into a 5-year IB/M program as well. 5-year Bachelor's in Music is WAY too long and
WAY too intensive of a program. Solidify the curriculum and take out the "intense" classes that aren't
applicable to the field at all!
E. Technology. We are interested in knowing more about how you feel towards the use of technology in teaching. Please

23. Why did you decide to become a teacher?(7 Responses)
I love working with children and sharing my passion for music with them.
Because I was inspired by my former music teachers.
Because I enjoy working with children and to help others to enjoy musical expression in their lives
I wanted to be able to teach the content of music and to give others the tools to find passion in music as I
did.
The satisfaction that you helped someone learn a skill/concept that they didn't know before.
I wanted to be a teacher ever since my little brother was born (he's 4 years younger than me). I found joy
in teaching him simple things, such as how to walk and talk, and was very proud when he achieved.
My high school music teachers were inspiration.

27. Please add anything pertinent that you feel was not covered in this survey. (1 Responses)
Making the music program a five year masters program and removing the intended classes is not a good idea and I
personally think that it will take away from the quality of teachers that UCONN is producing. When it comes to
assessment, differentiation, and working with diverse students I feel as if I am not as well versed as other students
in other subject areas because the material was often time a stretch to be applied to the field of music.
