Duties:
All STEM discipline students will be assigned to a regular SSS advisor who will delegate
specific STEM-related topics to faculty advisors. These may include research and major
exploration, resume design, career search, etc. SSS faculty advisors will assist with
implementing advising tasks, timelines and benchmarks (i.e. early warning list, mid-term
grade list, non-returning students, low contact students, etc.). Faculty will be available for
special consultation on major exploration, resume design, graduation planning, research
opportunities, job shadow and other discipline-specific topics. The SSS staff advisors will
continue to work on appeals, intakes and other technical student issues. Faculty advisors
collaborate with SSS staff advisors on educational planning, deciding on a major, course
scheduling, and non-traditional credit options as appropriate.
Possesses strong interpersonal skills, the ability to mentor and to interact with a diverse
population.
Uses test scores and judgment when determining course placement and semester load.
Provides extensive explanation of University policies, degree audits and creation of
semester-by-semester plans to ensure timely graduation.
Synthesizes student's personal circumstances and individual needs to promote academic
success while maintaining confidentiality and professional demeanor.
Adheres to FERPA regulations and has completed FERPA UA training (enclose certificate).
Regularly attends and actively participates in SSS professional development trainings and
meetings.
Makes appropriate referrals to SSS professional staff and other campus offices concerning
authorization of appeals for financial aid; probation or academic disqualification and
academic circumstances for review by appropriate Director or Dean; alternative credit
options; financial aid issues; transfer credit evaluations; security or safety issues; or other
concerns outside the scope of this position.
Serves as liaison between SSS and home academic department and college/school.
Transmits and adapts information, policies, procedures pertaining to academic advising in
use in SSS to home department and college/school.
May be required to perform other tasks or duties as determined by the SSS Director.
