U.S. citizen or permanent resident UHM undergraduate students who combine modern foreign
language training with area/international studies in full-time degree programs
Academic Year 2010-2011 Fellowship (Fall 2010-Spring 2011)
(Tuition support up to $10,000 and $5,000 stipend for the year) Recipients must take at least one
language course above elementary level and one area/international studies course each semester.

Summer 2010 Fellowship (for East Asia and Southeast Asia)
(Tuition up to $4,000 and $2,500 stipend) Recipients must take 140 hours or more of language
instruction at intermediate level (200 and 300 levels), or 120 hours or more of language
instruction at advanced level (400 or higher level) in an intensive program of 6 weeks or longer.
Recipients in East Asian languages may take two appropriate language courses through UHM
summer sessions.
Students who already possess language fluency equivalent to educated native speakers will be
given lowest consideration. In line with federal guidelines, FLAS recipients will be asked to
provide further information and to be tested for language proficiency both pre- and post-award.

FLAS awards are contingent upon grants from the U.S. Department of Education. Summer awards will
be announced in early April. Academic Year 2010-11 announcements will be made after the release of
funding information in June 2010.

Proposed Study Program
If applying for Summer FLAS to study outside of UHM, provide a description of the host
language program and a copy of the language course syllabus. This must be assessed prior to
application submission by a UH language instructor for overall merit based on the following
criteria: intensive language training with either 140 hours of instruction at the intermediate level
(2nd/3rd year) or 120 hours of instruction at the advanced level (4th year & higher) over a period
of 6 weeks at a minimum. Recipients in East Asian languages may take two appropriate
language courses through UHM summer sessions. Later changes must be reported and
approved.
