Committee on Athletics Manoa Faculty Senate October 1, 2014 Minutes In attendance: Audrey Asahina, , Guylaine Poisson, Ian Oyama, Margit Watts, Jenny Wells, Kelley Withy, Peter Nicholson, Duane Stevens Absent - Excused: Halina Zaleski, Hannah Nguyen, David Ericson Agenda Items September minutes Decision on Chair and Vice Chair COIA Statement on The NCAA's Reorganization plan Athletic Director report to Manoa Senate Board of Regents (BOR) Committee on Athletics Contacts AD to present directly to Committee outside of BOR policy NCAA investigation Special Considerations for athletes in admission Kelley presented her priority issues for Actions/Follow- up Accepted with revisions Kelley reports that Halina accepted Vice Chair and she accepts Chair -7 of 8 members of COA voted unanimously to support COIA statement -Kelley presented committee vote and COIA statement to SEC -SEC presented COIA statement to Chancellor to sign in support – Chancellor decided not to endorse it -Questions to be written by COA and presented to AD in advance (Kelley to solicit questions via email) -Duane (SEC) invited AD to Manoa Senate – informal agreement for AD to come in Spring quarter – probably February Moved and seconded: The Committee on Athletics recommends that SEC make a recommendation to Chancellor that the BOR be advised to follow their policies in Chapter 7, Section B on athletics referring questions on athletics directly to the Chancellor who is responsible for athletics at Manoa -Vote was unanimously in favor Kelley reports that It is anticipated that the NCAA will visit to compete their investigation later this year Kelley to contact Jenny Matsuda, Director / Academic Advisor to get information on special considerations that are provided for athletes during admission COA 1. Student Athletes well-being -on the road (internet access) 2. Fair admissions -Kelley to invite Student Body president and rep from Student Athletics Group to provide perspective on this issue -Kelley to invite Admissions Director to a meeting to review policies with committee 3.
