Faculty experts/pending legislation review/input
The legislature often studies potential bill issues prior to their introduction.
Manoa’s government relations staff reviews issues of interest to the legislature
each Fall. CFS is asked to work with Elmer Kaai, Gregg Takayama and others to
identify issues for which Manoa faculty expertise could be valuable and then
assist in identifying faculty who can serve as resources to the legislature
(preparing testimony, producing reports, etc.). The committee is asked to report to
the Senate by November 2012.

Senate terms--3 years?
The committee is asked to evaluate whether a change in Senate terms from two to
three years would improve the overall functioning of the Senate. Issues to
consider include, but are not limited to stability, workload, and committee
functioning. Considerations raised include increasing continuity, balancing new
ideas v. continuity, increasing non-senator representation on committees to
increase continuity, and the consideration that a 3-year term will lead to a 6 year
maximum service limit, rather than a 4 year maximum limit. The committee is
asked to report to the Senate by January 2012.

Solicit Faculty Service Volunteers
CFS is asked to prepare and send a general “call for service participation” email
to the entire faculty during the first week of March identifying general categories
of possible service opportunities during AY 2012-2013 including undergraduate
education, graduate education, undergraduate research, executive hiring and
