STUDENT SENATE SESSION XXXVII – MEETING 20 March 22nd, 2016 – 7:00PM – Paul College Room 185 I. II. CALL TO ORDER: GUEST SPEAKER: Amy Maki, UNH Communications & Public Affairs A. We are going to share two concepts and want to get your feedback. B. What to you all think of the phrase “edge of possible.” i. Shannon: I don’t like it, for it implies an end. ii. Amanda: I like it because it encompasses the college experience. iii. Jon: It makes me wonder where the edge is . . . not sure if that is good or bad. iv. Sam: I think it is a call to push the boundary. v. Lincoln: Makes me think of AT&T. C. Does it have a positive or negative connotation? i. Aaron: Hard to make the distinction without knowing the context. D. Could it be incorporated as a slogan for UNH? i. Amanda: UNH is about believing in each other, and this slogan does not seem to embody that. ii. Sam: As it is, it feels like fluff and is rather empty. E. Here are two concepts for our View Book featuring “the edge of possible.” These concepts are not final. i. The Senate believes that a background images should be used rather than a plain background. However, the text needs to stand out and truly resemble the college experience without being too long and distracting. III. ROLL CALL IV. COMMUNICATIONS A. Senators and Guests i. No communications. Historian Jesse: I see some new faces, so please state your name when you make a comment so that I can put you in the minutes. In addition, I have an announcement to share with you all. Recently the Anti-Defamation League selected me and eighteen other college students across the nation to take part in a summer program: Campus Leaders Mission to Israel. I am announcing this to you because the Student Senate is a one of the reasons why I was selected to go on this mission, and why I have chosen to participate in this mission. In Israel I will be enhancing my leadership skills, and learning how to strengthen multi-cultural relations here on campus. I hope to represent this body and the University well as I take part in this summer mission, and I intend to bring back valuable ideas and insights that would be of considerable benefit to this campus. External Affairs Chair John: I have a resolution up tonight, and it contains a big idea worth six months of work. Council Chair applications are also out, so please consider applying if interested. xiii. Fraternity and Sorority Liaison Allison: Absent. xiv. Health and Wellness Chair Emily: There is going to be a health workshop this week, and I encourage everyone to attend. xv. Judicial Affairs Chair Sam: My council will be meeting at noon tomorrow. First-Year Senator Katie: I am sharing my First-Year Guide with all of you, and I would appreciate your input and comments. E. Student Trustee i. Lincoln: Contact me if you want to know what is going on. F. Student Body Vice President i. Ryan: A week and a half ago I sent you the election results. Feel free to contest them if you so desire. I would like to congratulate Jon Dean for winning the position of Student Body President, Jason Rubinstein for winning the position of Student Body Vice“Happiness depends upon ourselves” -Aristotle V. VI. VII. President, and Lincoln Crutchfield for winning the position of Student Trustee. G. Student Body President i. Cam: Please take the survey that I mentioned at the last meeting if you have not done so already. Next week there are going to be interviews for a new position: Associate Vice-Provost for Professional Success. Feel free to talk to the candidates. H. Student Senate Speaker i. Doug: Do not leave after new business. NEW BUSINESS A. XXXVII- 3.18- Removal of Senators i. Amanda added Lauren McGrath (Co-Hetzel) 1. Passed with one objection and one abstention. B. XXXVII- 2.19- Approval of Senators i. No action. C. XXXVII- R35- Supporting the Creation of the Student Alumni Network i. Jon: There is a need for students to get a better understanding of how to network, for it is an important step in professional development. This program works directly with the Career Center, organizations, and alumni, and it benefits all majors. ii. Passed unanimously. OTHER BUSINESS A. Executive Session B. Motion for the Speaker to share full results of the Student Body Election. i. Danny: Results should be available for anyone to see. ii. Motion passed with two objections. C. Nominations for Speaker i. Doug: Anyone who has been a student for at least three semesters can be nominated for the position of Speaker. Nominations will also be accepted the day of the election. ii. Sam: I nominate Doug. 1. Seconded and accepted. iii. Emerson: I nominate Cam 1. Seconded and respectfully declined. iv.
