Winter Institute 2005 Assessment 101 Session
Assessment and Recommendations Compiled by Mary Connolly
January, 2006
Assessment of Session:
1. Participants specifically stated they had an increased understanding of assessment.
2. Participants clearly indicated an increased understanding of the differences between
assessment and evaluation.
3. The workshop facilitator’s and session participants’ examples of assessment techniques
were helpful.
4. Participants’ dialogues and discussions were valuable.
5. Many participants found it affirming to understand that they were currently using some type
of assessment.
6. Eighty percent of participants stated a definite plan to incorporate and or refine either
assessment and/or general education into their teaching.
Recommendations for Assessment 101:
1. Write a clearer description for the Assessment 101 session. Two participants expected the
opportunity to develop assessment tools.
2. Keep within the Assessment 101 handouts the General Education outcomes and rubrics,
references to divisional Learning Liaisons, and information regarding how to access the
tools and materials available on Sinclair’s Assessment web site. A small number of
participants indicated they were not aware of one or more of these valuable resources.

DRAFT
Overall Rationale for Quarterly Faculty Meetings with the VPI
Why have faculty meetings with the VPI (Valuable Promising Inquiries)?
To develop a greater awareness of the state, national, and global implications for community
colleges (VPI)
To provide direct and consistent dialogue with the top level of Instruction (VPI)
To share important teaching and learning information (LLs & VPI)
 Focusing on helping students learn
 Recognizing the importance of curriculum, assessment, General Education
 Assessment is essential to Sinclair’s success and future progress.
Warm up Activity with Note Cards (results feed into Newsletter)
What have I done differently in the past year to help students learn?
How did I decide what to do differently?
What information can I use to make additional decisions about helping students learn?
How will I know if the changes I made improved student learning?
Frank’s thoughts…
LLs’ Qs
If a new faculty member asks you what Sinclair assessment at the college is all about, how would
you respond in a short, memorable statement?
My division has worked extensively with Gloria Rogers and that’s not her definition. What’s up
with that?
What are your topmost questions? (use these either today or in newsletter)
How could Sinclair help you be better able to help students learn?
Muddiest point?
