2015-2016 Course Syllabus for U.S. HISTORY
Term 1

Objectives: U.S. History is a comprehensive course in which students take a Subject
Area Test as a requirement for graduation. Attendance is crucial for success in this
class. Student will be required to read chapters independently in preparation for the
class lectures and tests.

the U.S.

6. Analyze the contributions of Americans to the ongoing democratic process.
Tests and Grades
Grading: A=90-100 B=80-89 C=70-79 D=65-69 F=below 65 I=incomplete
Grading follows the policies of Biloxi Public Schools. A mid-term progress report and a report card following the end of each term are issued.
Quizzes: Students will work independently on supplemental or enrichment activities
for each unit. A quiz will be given to check for completion and understanding of U.S
History objectives. There are no retakes for quiz.
Tests: A test will be given after completion of every unit, and will include material from
past units. Test results will be reviewed with students the following school day. If
student is absent the day of the test, they are expected to test immediately upon
return, and a '1' will be recorded in the gradebook until test is taken. At the end of
each term a comprehensive departmental exam will be given, which will include
content covered during the current and previous terms.
Tutoring hours: Monday & Friday 2:20 – 3:00; Tuesday 2:20 -3:40
Retesting: You will be given the opportunity to retest within ten days of receiving your
graded test. It will not be the same as the original test and the highest test grade will
be taken. However, before student can retest, they must meet the following
stipulations:
1. Student must sign up for mandatory re-teaching the Tuesday after their test
results. They will then retest the following Tuesday. No retest will be started after 3:00.
2. Student must have completed all classwork to be eligible for re-test.
Homework/Assignments/Projects: Students should check the classroom board daily for
due dates, homework assignments, and additional information. Assignments will only
be taken one day late for a late grade of 65. Extra Credit will be available each term.

independently and stay current on all assignments. Students' term grades will be
computed using the following formula:

**August 7 - August 18: Gilded Age Overview
Test - August 18, 2015 - Test results reviewed on August 19th.
Corresponds to Chapters 6 - 8 New Industrial Age
- A broad introductory overview that will introduce Gilded Age policy which includes laissezfaire policies, economics, and the political leadership that will oversee it.
**August 19 - August 27: Westward Expansion
Test - August 27, 2015 - Test results reviewed on August 28th.
Corresponds to Chapter 5 - Changes on the Western Frontier (1877-1900)
- Identify the push-pull factors that lured people to migrate west.
- Describe how the U.S. frontier shifted westward.
- Examine U.S. policies toward Native Americans.
- Explain how mining, ranching, and farming developed in the West.
**August 28 - September 9: Industrialization
Test - September 9, 2015 - Test results reviewed on September 10th.
Corresponds to chapter 6 - A New Industrial Age (1877-1900)
- Identify how daily life changed in the post-Civil War United States.
- Analyze how technological advances lead to the growth of businesses and cities.
- Understand why American industrialists of the late 1800s were called both
“robber barons” and “captains of industry.”
- Describe how social Darwinism affected Americans' views on big business.
- Contrast big businesses and small businesses
- Identify factors that led to a growing workforce in the late 1800s.
- Describe factory work and why it was sometimes necessary for entire families to
work

**September 10 - September 18: Urbanization and Immigration
Test September 18, 2015 - Test results reviewed on September 21st.
Corresponds to chapters 7 & 8 Immigrants and Urbanization (1877-1914) and Life at the Turn of
the Twentieth Century (1877-1917)
- Describe how business influenced politics during the Gilded Age.
- Identify government reform of the spoils system and regulated railroads.
- Analyze the challenges faced by immigrants from Europe, Asia, and Mexico
during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
- Identify the causes and effects of urban growth in the late 1800s and early
1900s.
- Review developments that helped cities grow and how living conditions changed.
- Explain how reform movements helped the needy.
- List the efforts to control immigration and personal behavior in the late 1800s.
- Describe how/why public education expanded.
- Compare and contrast the views of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois
regarding African American education.
- Describe new forms of entertainment at the turn of the century.
- Describe how African Americans were discriminated against after Reconstruction
and how they resisted it.
- Analyze the debate over women’s equality.
- Discuss how women’s work changed in the home and workplace.
- Describe how businesses were influence by women’s new role as consumers.

Test September 28, 2015 - Test results reviewed September 29th.
Corresponds to Chapter 9 - The Progressive Era (1890-1920)
- Describes Post Reconstruction South in the wake of Jim Crow and the origins of the Civil
Rights Movement
** September 29 - October 6: Populism
Test October 6, 2015 - Test results reviewed on October 7th.
Corresponds to Chapter 5
- Examine hardships of people living in the West and how they overcame them.
- Discuss why farmers protested the post-Civil War economic policies and the
government's response to their protests.
- Identify the key goals of the Populists.
**October 7 - 8: Cluster 1 Review & Test

** Some units may run longer or shorter than others, and pacing guide may be off a day or
two.
Cell Phone Policy - The teacher reserves the right to control cell phone usage within the
classroom. Phones must be silenced and put away before entering the classroom. No student
has my permission to record or videotape classroom activity or instruction to protect student
and teacher privacy.
