Today we are going to learn a song that will teach us how to spell Mississippi and use the tune of a song to change the words and meaning. Introduce “Go Mississippi”. Tell the students that this is our state song. Have them listen. While they are listening , label the verse as section A and the chorus as section B. As the song progresses, write the musical formula on the board ABBBcoda . (review the definition of Coda: the end of the song). Break down the choreography for the verse. Learn the lyrics line by line and practice the song as a group. Introduce “Grand Old School” sung to the tune “You’re a Grand Old Flag”. Discuss how songs can be recycled by adding different words. Compare and contrast the two songs. The words change the song from a patriotic song about our country and flag to a celebration song about school.
