MUS 6 Listening to , analyzing, and describing music
MUS 8 Understanding the relationships between music and the other disciplines outside the arts
Plan
Begin with move to learn.
Explain that music can help us learn and remember what we learned. Today we are going to learn a
song that will teach us how to spell Mississippi and use the tune of a song to change the words and
meaning.
Introduce “Go Mississippi”. Tell the students that this is our state song.
Have them listen. While they are listening , label the verse as section A and the chorus as section B. As
the song progresses, write the musical formula on the board ABBBcoda . (review the definition of Coda:
the end of the song).
Break down the choreography for the verse.
Learn the lyrics line by line and practice the song as a group.
Introduce “Grand Old School” sung to the tune “You’re a Grand Old Flag”.
Discuss how songs can be recycled by adding different words.
Compare and contrast the two songs. The words change the song from a patriotic song about our
country and flag to a celebration song about school.
Learn the lyrics line by line and practice the song as a group.
