Writing a Scholarship Letter
One barrier to education that many students face is a financial one. College can be expensive,
but there are many scholarship opportunities that can help people pay for college. For
example, North Seattle Community College has an Education Fund that offers scholarships for
students with financial need. In order to apply for scholarships like this one you will often have
to complete forms and/or write a letter or essay. It is important to read the scholarship
information carefully. Include any information they ask for, and complete each step of the
application process thoroughly.
For this assignment you will write a letter to the scholarship selection committee. Follow the
template below:

Dear Selection Committee:
In this first paragraph, explain why you’re writing. (To apply for the scholarship).
In this paragraph, tell them about yourself – your background, what you’re studying, what
your goals are.
In this paragraph, tell them about any difficulties or challenges that this money will help.
Examples: work full/part-time, supporting family, learning a new language, first student in
the family to go to college.
In this paragraph, thank the committee for their consideration and give them contact
information.
