Announcing the New Laboratory Hazard Assessment Tool (LHAT) LHAT, a new online tool aimed at creating safety in the workplace, is now available for PI’s and lab workers. LHAT was developed as part of the Personal Protective Equipment policy signed by outgoing President Yudof earlier this summer that will go into effect on March 31, 2014, after which enforcement will begin. The LHAT is a UC wide laboratory assessment tool that helps Principal Investigators identify activities and hazards to ensure that lab personnel are properly protected in their work environment. LHAT provides an online solution that facilitates reviews of lab risks, as well as the on-going distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintains records of PPE assessment and training. The assessment helps to identify and communicate hazards present in the lab, information about what PPE should be worn in a specific lab environment, and provides PPE training. Each LHAT user will need to print a voucher that can brought to a PPE distribution event in order receive free personal protective equipment. As a Principal Investigator (PI), LHAT allows you to: Identify or add lab workers into their lab group Determine hazards that are present in the lab through guided questions Communicate laboratory hazards to personnel through LHAT Identify the proper PPE to be used based on the hazard assessment As Laboratory Personnel, LHAT allows you to: Identify with a lab group View potential hazards present in the lab through the assessment Receive a list of proper PPE to be used in your lab setting Receive training and demonstrate understanding of the training on the selected PPE for your lab Earn voucher for free PPE to be used at the distribution event The new LHAT system will help ensure the safety of personnel working in University labs and research areas. Please take a minute to ensure your safety before continuing on solving mysteries, curing diseases, and making new discoveries!
