LSE POWER CONFERENCE 2016 – MAKING A CASE FOR ATTENDANCE
If you have to write to your line manager with a business case for your attendance you will find some
suggested text below that may be helpful. Not all of it may be directly relevant to you, but feel free to edit
it or use what might best fulfil your requirements. Don’t forget to take the bold off the (insert here)
sections!
Dear (Insert manager name here),
The first LSE Power Conference will be taking place on 29th June 2016 at Woburn House. The network
focuses on developmental events for members of PSS to aid their professional development and
progression at LSE, drawing on both external trainers and the experience of colleagues within the
School. In the past they have run events on networking, social media branding and resilience in the
workplace. Upcoming events will explore mentoring and secondments.
Key events at the conference include a workshop by Stella Creasy MP aimed at supporting leadership
ambitions and potential, as well as a session by Esther Stanhope, a well-regarded confidence and
impact coach, on communication skills. There will also be breakout workshops on a variety of topics
such as negotiating skills and building resilience and confidence. The cost is a very modest £99 for the
full day.
I am writing to request your approval to attend as I am certain that the knowledge I gain from
participating in this conference will benefit me in my ongoing professional and personal development and
enable me to contribute more to the activities I undertake at LSE.
Here are a few ways we will benefit from my attendance:
 It will encourage delegates to continue their professional development at LSE.
 It will equip delegates with skills that will support them in their day to day activities.
 This conference provides a unique opportunity to meet and network with PSS colleagues from
across the School, establish professional relationships and learn from their experiences.
 I will receive first-hand information about current best practice in the fields referred to above.
 I will learn from the successes, expertise and best practices of colleagues and trainers and be
able to apply it to my own role and the activities of (insert department or division name here).
 I can participate in exclusive hands-on training courses, saving us time and money on separate
training.
When I return from the Power Conference, I will submit a post-conference report that will include an
executive summary, major takeaways, tips and recommendations that will benefit our team. I will also
share relevant information and make my conference materials available to my colleagues and key
personnel within (insert department or division name here).
Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
