Information Sources for C1 Inheriting the Future: Use It or Lose It Prepared by Connie McDowell, Librarian Two Approaches to Finding News Stories 1. Searching Search by keyword on the Web and in periodical databases. This is the most efficient way to search to search hundreds or thousands of publications for articles on a specific topic. 2. Browsing Browse web sites, print or online magazines and newspapers. Less efficient, but can lead to interesting and unexpected results. May all also give you a broader view of the breadth of discourse on your story and other stories. Step 1 - Choose a topic or news story To start with, choose a couple of story ideas before settling on one to pursue for the portfolio. If you need ideas, try browsing through some of the magazines and newspapers listed in this handout, either in hard copy (print format) or through their online versions. In addition to these, you could try browsing through some of the web sites listed in the handout. Step 2 - Finding More Stories on Your Topic Once you've settled on a couple of topics, the most efficient way to find more articles is to search in the library's periodical databases, which are available from the library's web site.
