Agenda reviewed and approved as is. 2. Minutes – September 20, 2013, meeting minutes approved. 3. Message from chair – welcomed everyone and facilitated introductions 4. DAC Professional Development Subcommittee Report – The sign up process for the Fall book is going well, with 45 people signed up so far. The book is The Hustle: Ten Lives in Black & White by Doug Merlino, Winter – Looking Like the Enemy by Mary Matsuda Gruenewald, and Spring – Trickster: Native American Tales: A Graphic Collection by Matt Dembicki. We are working on getting Larry Matsuda (as recommended by Lydia Minatoya from her experience at the White Privilege Conference) to come as a speaker in February related to Winter Quarter’s book. Wadiyah Nelson is working with the subcommittee to get a Native American Storyteller present during Spring Quarter. The committee is also planning a student panel of students from Indigenous Cultures. Suggestion was made that we perhaps include students of indigenous cultures from other countries. This idea will be considered by the subcommittee. Related professional development activity Beyond Inclusion Faculty Learning Community is continuing this year. Anyone interested in participating can attend the Collaboration Day workshop to learn the overview of the framework from co-author Margot Boyer, and then join the monthly meetings. 5. MLK Subcommittee Committee – Carianya reports that the subcommittee has not met yet but will meet soon. They are planning to work closely with Kevin and Jeffrey regarding how to coordinate the activities with what is already planned, which includes Pat Wright’s Experience Gospel Choir coming at noon on the Wednesday before the MLK Holiday. They will come up with a plan and budget at that time. Suggestions discussed included ideas to include the larger community and actions in Olympia. Question raised regarding use of the website to share information, and whether there is a blog available there. Kevin mentioned that post cards can be mailed to the community. Perhaps a Facebook page for DAC can be set up. Suggestion made that other related community events also be posted. Importance of educating the immigrant/refugee and international students on the related history was mentioned. Incorporating visual information was another suggestion. It might be helpful to purchase and post the timeline history of the Civil Rights movement and MLK contributions. Suggestion was made that the timeline also connect to what is happening now that is related. 6. Treasurer’s Report – Carianya reports that so far for this year, we have a budget of $20,000; we have spent $192.50 for the Summer Retreat, and for the DAC Books for Fall - $547.06. Balance at this time is $19,233.44. 7. Inclusion Change Team Report – this team came out of the joint retreat of DAC and the Executive Team in July. This team includes from the E-team – Jack Bautsch, Steve Miller, and Toni Bajado, and from DAC Betty Williams, Carianya Napoli, Jeffrey Vasquez, and Chilan Ta, who is serving as the Interim Diversity Director. The Team has met twice as a whole so far, and will meet again in October. One of the major goals the group has worked on so far has been about hiring practices. A subgroup met with Paul Kurose and Pete Lortz who attended OSU’s Search Advocate Training over the summer. Jack, as the lead for the Presidential Search Committee has set up a training on Friday, Nov. 8, with a representative from OSU to work with the entire Presidential Search Committee in the morning from 9-1, and anyone who wants to be a Search Advocate on our campus will stay for the full day of training. The Presidential Search Committee is expected to have 17 people, and that leaves space for 13 more for those who want to be Search Advocates. Some of those on the Presidential Search Committee may also want to serve in an ongoing role as Search Advocates and stay for the day. The Inclusion Change Team is going to be coming to meetings of leadership to present our recommendations about getting more people involved in attending diversity training and other events, as well as letting them know about the team and its goals. 8. Discussion of how to proceed regarding the DAC recommendations from our last meeting involved much sharing of ideas regarding how to move forward the Search Advocate process for the district. Having the Chancellor involved in the training is a desired outcome, and our other related goal is to have the district set up a position of Search Advocate lead as consultant and trainer. 9. Activities and Budgeting – Suggestion of using a student survey to assess needs was discussed. There may be a chance to work with Jack on the upcoming student survey that we expect to be done this coming Spring. Students feeling that they matter and are respected and safe on our campus is an important goal. Student success depends on that happening more consistently. Suggestion was made of sponsoring affinity groups where faculty can offer safe space discussions. Café Conversations model could be used. Courageous conversations about teaching and learning could be valuable. Lots of ideas are discussed. 10. Motion made to approve $5,600 for the DAC Professional Development Subcommittee request and it was approved. Chair made a request that folks come up with specific budget requests for ideas they want DAC to proceed with by the next meeting. Concern raised that the budget should be figured out as a whole before DAC approves requests, and it is acknowledged that it would be best to develop goals and specific budget requests by the summer retreat.
