ENGL&101 – English Composition I (Online & Hybrid)
Week 2 Reading Response
This reading response has two parts. The first deals with “The Fourth of July” by Audre Lorde.
After critically reading and annotating this narrative, address the following two questions:
1) Explain what, to you, this story is about. Think about overall abstract ideas rather than
the concrete plot.
2) Locate two instances where Lorde employs a Storytelling Tool. Quote the relevant lines
here and then explain what Storytelling Tool each passage is an example of and how it
works to make vivid and concrete some of the abstract ideas you listed above.
The second part of this response deals with the Personal Narrative assignment sheet, Sample A
Narrative, and Same C Narrative. After critically reviewing these documents, address the
following two questions.
1. What is one thing the Sample A Narrative does that is effective in terms of telling a vivid
story? Reference in some way the material we have covered so far in this class, including
the Storytelling Tools and advice from Trimble.
2. What is one thing the Sample C Narrative does that is ineffective in terms of telling a
vivid story? Reference in some way the material we have covered so far in this class,
including the Storytelling Tools and advice from Trimble.
