4. The melting of polar ice is one way that freshwater enters the ocean. Because of
climate change we are seeing increases in the amount of freshwater entering the ocean
from melting ice caps on the poles. Based off of today’s density demo, what happens to
this freshwater when it enters the ocean—does it sink to the bottom? mix with the salty
ocean water? form a layer on the surface?
Given your answer above, why do you think scientists are so worried about what this
freshwater will do to the ocean? Think about how the freshwater may affect both marine
organisms and the ocean’s mixing.
