Listening/Speaking/Pronunciation 2

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this class you will practice speaking, listening & pronunciation skills through the following activities:

 in-class dialogues and conversations

 pronunciation practice of individual sounds and sentence sound patterns

 short oral presentations to the class

 small group and partner work

 listening to and/or watching various media

 vocabulary and grammar practice from reading, writing & grammar classes

Because you are a visitor to the American school system, we will also spend time learning about American academic culture.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

1.

Come to class on time every day.

2.

Participate in class activities—Do not do homework for another class. Do not sleep

during class. Do not use your phone or other devices during class.

3.

Work well with your classmates in groups or as partners.

4.

Be prepared for class every day (do homework and bring materials).

5.

Use the Library/Loft/Lab.

6.

Use English as much as possible.

7.

Turn off the sound on your cell phone.

8.

Use basic classroom skills, such as copying from the board, organize study materials.

9.

Take personal responsibility for learning the material: ask for repetition, and clarification, manage your time, utilize study and group-work skills etc.

Intensive English Program

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

 If you miss more than 8 classes, you will fail the class.

Course Syllabus

 If you miss an in class test or speaking assignment, you cannot do it later except for in an emergency situation.

 If you miss only one class, call a classmate to find out the homework you missed.

 If you are going to be absent for more than 1 day, call or email me.

COURSE GOALS/LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, you will be able to…

Listening

 Show understanding of simple conversations, explanations, narratives, and instructions through response.

 Respond appropriately to frequently used words, phrases, expressions, directions, and questions

 Identify main ideas of spoken language.

 Distinguish tense, and number in spoken language.

 Use context clues to aid in overall comprehension.

Speaking

 Ask and answer basic information questions,

 share opinions and personal information,

 tell stories, talk about plans, and give simple instructions.

 Ask for clarification or repetition to aide in comprehension.

 Speak appropriately in various social or functional situations.

 Use Level 2 grammar structures appropriately when speaking.

 Use and pronounce level 2 vocabulary appropriately.

GRADING

Pronunciation

Clearly pronounce targeted consonant and vowel sounds.

Correctly use intonation in affirmative sentences and Y/N questions

Recognize and use irregular spelling/sound patterns (c/g, etc.)

Identify and use correct syllable stress.

Other

 Interpret and use body language appropriately.

You must achieve a 75% or higher on your assignments, quizzes and exams in three categories-speaking, listening, and pronunciation-in order to pass this course. You are also expected to make an effort and be prepared for class, and not to disrupt other students learning, so a part of your grade will be based on attendance, participation and preparedness.

Intensive English Program Course Syllabus

Assessment Methods:

Speaking (30 %): role plays, short class presentations, group discussions

Listening comprehension (30 %): weekly quizzes, interviews, in-class monitoring, exams

Pronunciation (25 %): quizzes, recordings, in-class speaking activities

Participation/Effort (15%): attendance, participation, preparedness

Homework – Homework is assigned to help you prepare for class work or tests, or to give you additional practice in specific skills. I will not usually collect homework, but I will check that you are doing your work and that you are participating in class, groups or partner work.

CHEATING

It is very important that you understand the value of ‘academic honesty’ in American culture.

 Do not copy another student’s homework.

 Do not look at another student’s test paper during a test.

 Do not ask someone else to do your homework for you.

 Do not copy your homework off of the Internet!

If you do these things you can fail the assignment, fail the whole class, or you can get kicked out of school! Don’t try it!
