SELF-STUDY GUIDELINES
 The RES courses are offered as an independent self-study.
 They were originally designed as lecture classes and not
intended for independent study. The class PowerPoints alone
are not sufficient to fulfill on the learning objectives.
 You will need to conduct independent study to get all the
information you may need.
 These classes have not been updated since 2011 and may
contain outdated information and/or broken internet web links.
 You are expected to learn the material on your own using the
PowerPoints, assigned and recommended reading, the internet,
and other resources to sufficiently understand the material
necessary to complete all assessments and assignments.
Expectations for a 200 level course
 Higher than the 100 level courses
 You are expected to submit quality work, that is, correct
spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.
 You will be expected to submit examples of critical
thinking about the material you are learning and
 You will be expected to communicate what you have
learned to the class through an oral presentation at the
end of the quarter.
 All of these requirements are designed to help you
develop necessary skills for today’s real estate job
market.
Expectations for Independent Study
 The Summer Lab is NOT a lecture course
 The materials provided to assist in your independent
study are NOT designed to be a completely independent
course.
 The Lab meetings are for clarification and questions.
 Five courses are being offered during the Summer Lab
• Lab meetings will not consist of lecture.
• You are expected to perform additional research to sufficiently
complete assessments and assignments on your own and when
you have difficulty that you come to the lab to get the resources
you need to complete the assignment.

Sustainability is like Ecology on Steroids and the
Joy is in the Journey…
 Paradigm Shifts & Perspective
Critical Thinking
Which box shall we start thinking outside of?
When you are thinking “outside the box”,
It begs the question, which box are you in then?
“People talk about the need to think outside the box - especially with all the
daunting challenges we're facing today. My experience is that it is really an
infinite series of boxes. We expand our thinking and understanding and climb
into the next bigger box.
I love this image because it reminds me, when I get in paradigm wars, you
know, my paradigm is bigger than your paradigm, that they are all tiny
inaccurate versions of reality.
It keeps me open to learning more. If someone has a bigger picture, a bigger
map, or they can draw in parts that I haven't figured out yet, I'm ready to go
look. I may decide I like my version better but I want to have a look at your
map. Our job is to make the largest and most accurate map of reality that we
can in our time here. We have to be willing to redraw our map constantly…”
-David Eisenberg
Knowing what box you started in
 Begins the Journey
 Leads to continuing education and lifetime of
learning
 Sustainability is not just one thing, or apply to
one discipline, it’s literally universal.
Understanding this basic principle is the
foundation to build your green real estate
marketing program.
Communicate | Coordinate | Manage
Communicating Green
Accuracy & clarity is PARAMONT for Real Estate
Professionals
 Greenwashing traps
• Oversimplification
• Misconceptions/ Exaggeration
 The importance of clear distinctions and precision
 The importance of knowing building science AND
to know when you don’t know enough to answer
certain questions.
• “I don’t know, but I have someone to refer you to”
Independent Study Essay Expectations
 Essay Structure – Grammar & Syntax
• Minor grammar and syntax errors will be accepted. Excessive
errors will affect your final grade.
• Written comments on your essays will contain a mix of
comments (about content or a writing style suggestion) and
edits (recommended text changes for content, clarity, or
syntax)
 Content Rubric – Qualities that receive poor grades
• Essays that do not directly answer the question or responds
to the assigned topic; those that are off-topic
• Essays that are based on questionable estimates or
assumptions
Evolution of your Education Reflected in
your Essays
 Communicate with Clarity & Originality
 Precision matters
–
The quality and accuracy of your words, either in print or
spoken, matter.
 Distinctions alter the occurring
–
When you can make distinctions between a green strategy
and a conventional strategy, you begin to see parallel
distinctions in many areas of your study and your life.
 Clear & comprehensive
–
Now that you understand the distinctions that is green
building, and you realize the importance of precision, then
your job is to communicate that message clearly and
authentically to your clients.
Essays
 Think Critically, Creatively, and Reflectively
• Steer away from generalizations, unsubstantiated
claims, over-simplifications
• Details are important in building science and
sustainability
 Example: Statements such as
“Solar PV systems cost $XX,XXX”
OK, but for what size system?
How many kWh?
What portion of their energy-demand?
 Some greenwashing
– Example: “Solar is free and clean”
Over-Simplification Trap Example
 Incorrect claim: Solar is free energy
 Precise Claim “While the fuel for renewable
energy systems is available daily at no charge
and no environmental impact, the collection
equipment requires natural resources and the
manufacturing processes have an
environmental impact.”

Building codes are to safeguard the
public health, safety, and general welfare
and protect the public from hazards
attributed to the built environment.
We must learn to think differently
and…
Acknowledge that
business as usual
isn’t working, we
need to define a
new usual
We must learn to integrate…
a new evolving perspective
with sustainable goals
into our building codes

Building Codes for a Small Planet.
Building Codes & Assumptions
We have assumed that in the future there will be:
• A stable and predictable climate.
• Adequate and affordable supplies of
energy, water, food and other critical
resources.
• Natural systems on Earth that are
robust enough to withstand whatever
humans may choose to do.
• Current regulatory systems that are
capable of dealing adequately with
emerging and unforeseen risks.
What if these assumptions are
incorrect?
