Proposal for a partnership between the 14/48 Projects and North Seattle College March 2015 The 14/48 Projects, a non-profit arts organization, will partner with North Seattle College for a residency relationship that benefits both parties. The proposed term for the initial residency would extend from the start of spring quarter 2015 until the end of winter quarter 2016, at which time the success of the relationship can be assessed to determine whether it should continue and/or changes to the relationship should be instituted. North Seattle College will provide: Use of one of the three offices in the Stage One area for the 14/48 Project’s administrative activities Use of the Green Room in Stage One for occasional meetings of the 14/48 Projects Access to the campus wifi Reduced cost rental of the Stage One Theater for the 14/48 Project’s educational programming The 14/48 Projects will provide: Rental referrals for productions or organizations who would be a good match for the Stage One space Basic advising to renting organizations about how to best make use of the Stage One space Cleaning and light maintenance of the theater and green room Information about renting organizations and shows to the North community (getting the word out about cultural opportunities on our campus) One faculty development workshop each quarter “Season Sponsor” credit in the 14/48 Project’s programs and publicity The benefit to the 14/48 Projects is the opportunity to have a physical administrative space and meeting space at no cost, and to have a reduced cost space to develop educational programming. The benefit to North Seattle College is in having a “steward” of the space who can help to direct renters towards North and spread the word about the available space. Stage One Theater may be in a position to serve a need for smaller and fringe theater groups in Seattle who are being priced out of the downtown area and need affordable, smaller spaces with adequate nearby parking. With better advertising to the North community, these performances serve as a cultural attraction in the Licton Springs neighborhood and for our students and staff. This partnership helps North to achieve our core themes: Advancing student success – continuing opportunities for students to participate in NorthShorts as well as see connections between what they are learning and local performances Excelling in teaching and learning – quarterly faculty development workshops focusing on improv and acting techniques that will help teachers as classroom leaders Building community – providing space for local theater groups and providing access to theater to the neighborhood and the North community This arrangement would serve as a first step in the partnership. An additional consideration for future could deepen and extend the partnership. For example, NSC currently stores a large amount of props and costumes that have little to no value outside of theatrical productions. The 14/48 Projects could, in return for some storage space in the current prop/costume room (approximately 10’ x 10’), not only maintain an inventory but also administer a rental/loan program with local fringe companies (who have a clear, constant need for low-cost production elements). As a rental program, it could produce direct revenue for NSC, though rental costs would limit demand. As a loan program, NSC would get publicity through the borrowing companies and increase good will in the community while establishing and strengthening connections with these arts groups. As part of this agreement, The 14/48 Projects would be willing to provide staff background checks and/or insurance information to limit possible liability for NSC.
