PROGRAM/SERVICE DESCRIPTION
The Arts, Humanities & Adult Basic Education Division offers a wide assortment of traditional
college transfer courses including Art, Drama, English, Intensive English, World Language,
Humanities, Journalism, Music, Speech and Tutoring, as well as courses in English as a Second
Language and pre-college level courses for native and non-native speakers (see Arts, Humanities
& Adult Basic Education). Basic studies programs provide instruction for those who want to
improve basic verbal and math skills or to earn a high school diploma in order to get better jobs,
continue their education and improve their lives.
• ADULT BASIC EDUCATION – Adult Basic Education courses, ABE 020, 021, 030, 031, 040
and 041, are equivalent to grades 1-8 in reading, writing, and arithmetic. These classes are
designed for native speakers of English; program tuition is $25.00. Students must attend an ABE
orientation session to take placement tests before registering for ABE classes.
• GENERAL EDUCATION DIPLOMA – The GED test preparation classes, GED 050, 051, 060
and 061, are for students who have not completed high school. These classes help students
prepare to pass the GED test. Completion of the five-part GED test earns a GED certificate
accepted as equivalent to a high school diploma by most schools, colleges and employers. The
GED test preparation courses are for residents and non-residents; program tuition is $25.00.
Students must attend a GED orientation session to take placement tests before registering for GED
classes. The GED test preparation classes are for students 19 years of age or older. GED
classes are also offered for students 16-24 years of age; students interested in these classes
should contact Belinda Tillman at 206-528-4517.
• ADULT HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION – A high school diploma may be earned at North
Campus. Adult High School classes are offered in English, History, Political Science, and Math.
High school completion classes are scheduled in the evenings, to give adult students an
opportunity to complete high school at hours that allow daytime jobs.
• ABE/ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE – Beginning English-as-a-Second-language classes
ESL 010 through ESL 079 are offered to help Non-English speaking adults learn the basics of
reading, writing, and speaking English. (They are referred to as ABE/ESL classes.) Citizenship
classes, ESL 071 through 073, are also offered. Classes are for immigrants, refugees, eligible
legalized aliens, and permanent resident cardholders; program tuition is $25.00. Placement tests
should be taken in the Testing Center to determine the appropriate level of classes; students must
also attend an ESL orientation before enrolling for classes.
The Advising Center helps students make academic choices to reach their educational goals.
The center is open to all students on a walk-in or appointment basis. The advisors offer help with
college transfer, professional and technical programs, business, English as a Second Language,
GED and high school completion programs.

CLASSROOM EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

Evacuation Routes and Procedures
Point to the map on the wall, physically point out the route or, in more complicated or isolated areas walk
the route with your students. Show them the assembly area. Instruct them to assemble at their
designated assemble areas and await further instructions.

Earthquake
When shaking begins, duck and cover. Most immediate danger is from falling debris, light fixtures, ceiling
tiles or concrete. Tables will protect you from those hazards. As soon as the shaking stops, begin orderly
evacuation to assembly area. Be alert to aftershocks. Stay as far as possible away from glass.

Intruder
If you hear gunshots or are advised of an intruder, barricade the door with chairs and tables, close blinds
and turn off lights. Assemble away from the doors and windows. If you cannot barricade then you should
have an alternate plan. Contact security for assistance. As a general safety precaution, you may
choose to keep your classroom door locked during class.

Fire
When the alarms sounds, immediately begin evacuation to your designated evacuation assemble area.
Take belongings and lock the door behind you.

Student Conduct Code
Point out sections covering harassment, stalking, threats and other behavior prohibited by WAC 132 F
http://apps.leg.wa.gov/WAC/default.aspx?cite=132F-121

Stalkers/sexual/verbal harassment
Report all incidents to campus security and local law enforcement. Security will assist in documenting the
incident and forwarding information to VP or Student Services.

Protection orders
If you choose, please provide a copy to campus security and discuss and special situations, concerns or
security needs. Bring a photo of the respondent.

Emergency Notification
Ask students if anyone has a cell phone, delegate some call 911 while another calls campus security at
206-527-3636. Have the student program the number to their cell phones.

Campus crime statistics
Please refer to the campus security web site for campus crime statistics and information on the student
right to know and other crime prevention information at http://www.northseattle.edu/services/security.htm

Snow closures, other emergency information
NSCC is a member of Schoolreport.org, Schoolreport.org member schools are able to send information
about any type of emergency or emergency closure via web link. That information is then picked up by
many of the local radio and TV broadcasters and rebroadcast. Most large Seattle area AM stations are
very good a broadcasting this information as are local TV stations. Campus Community Members may
sign up for email notification (text messaging not yet available) by going to http://www.schoolreport.org/

PROGRAM/SERVICE DESCRIPTION
North Seattle Community College’s Disability Services is committed to ensuring that qualified students
with documented disabilities are provided with an equal opportunity to participate in the variety of
educational, recreational, and social opportunities available at NSCC. Disability Services provides
academic accommodations for students with a documented, permanent or temporary physical, mental or
sensory disability; resource and referral information. Support services are available for enrolled students
and those planning to enroll.
Students seeking accommodation need to register with Disability Services. To do this, students must
complete an intake packet available at Disability Services. Intake packets can also be sent if students are
unable to pick them up on campus. After completing an intake packet, students make an appointment to
complete the intake interview and discuss accommodations. Though an Intake Appointment can be set
up at any time, it is preferable that it be done six weeks in advance of the need for accommodation since
some accommodations take time to coordinate. Students will also need to provide written documentation
of their disability. Documentation Guidelines, which clarify the type of documentation required, are
available. Contact Disability Services to request the appropriate guideline. Requested accommodations
must be supported by the documented effects of the disability.
Accommodations include, but are not limited to, testing modifications, alternative format textbooks, note
taking, adaptive equipment and software, tape recorders, talking calculators, spell checkers, wireless
microphones and receiver systems, and sign language interpreting. Students with disabilities who need
accommodations or other assistance are encouraged to contact Disability Services as soon as possible
after applying for admission to the college. It is the student’s responsibility to request accommodations in
a timely manner as accommodations are not offered retroactively.

PROGRAM/SERVICE DESCRIPTION
Integrated Studies is an interdisciplinary studies program, which encompasses both linked and
coordinated studies classes. Serving approximately 200 students per quarter, this program is a
requirement for all students receiving an AA degree. Four to five coordinated studies courses taught by
interdisciplinary faculty teams are offered year round with the student seminar being the “heart” of the
course. The student seminar is a small inquiry group and uses different texts from different disciplines.
The seminar method helps students develop the important academic skills of critical reading, writing, and
thinking regarding the complex and inter-related aspect of knowledge.
Linked classes are different from coordinated studies in that they are separate classes “linked” by the
instructors with common and inter-related assignments.
For more information about the integrated studies program, please refer to:

Please forward all calls to the Math, Science & Social Sciences Division at 527-3746. Most
callers know what they want and do not need our programs explained to them, as they are academic
rather than vocational. The only variance to this is when they call MS3 for “computer classes” and
they really want the Business, Engineering & Information Technologies Division at 527-3730, or
“health/medical classes” for the nursing program and really want the Health & Human Services
Division at 527-3790.

PROGRAM/SERVICE DESCRIPTION
PARKING PERMITS ARE REQUIRED OF ALL STUDENTS, GUESTS AND EMPLOYEES.
Due to space limitations, students are advised to buy a parking permit for the quarter when
registering.
Employee annual parking can be arranged at anytime by contacting the Transportation
Coordinator.
Quarterly parking for employees requires a verification of employment at the department level.
See your department for the appropriate form and procedure.
The only time you may park on campus without a permit is during the quarter break periods,
weekends and holidays.
GARAGE PARKING during the day is reserved for employees with annual and annual reserved
parking permits. Access to garage parking with the quarterly permit is permitted only after 5 PM.
However, access to garage disabled parking for students, guests and employees is permitted
during day and evening hours with BOTH a disabled permit AND a valid campus permit.
PERMIT VIOLATIONS, state motor vehicle laws and city traffic codes are strictly enforced.
The 3rd unpaid infraction results in vehicle immobilization and an additional $50 fee for boot
removal. Ticket fees are $10 per infraction in most cases, and higher for parking in disabled
spaces without a disabled placard/hangtag.
CARPOOLERS receive a reduced quarterly parking rate and must park in designated carpool
areas. Register for Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) Program to receive the carpool rate and
additional incentives. A new CTR application must be filled out during the first 2 weeks of each
quarter. For details and to apply, see the Transportation Coordinator, Toni Bajado. Use of the
West (Carpool) Lot from 7:00 AM - 9:00 AM is reserved for CTR carpoolers only.
GUEST PERMITS: Individual guest permits may be requested by non-student employees for onetime use by campus departments. Email Toni Bajado to request these. For events hosting 20 or
more, contact Jeff Caldwell by email—well in advance—to request parking arrangements.
PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION FEE SCHEDULE
Completed transportation forms are required for parking permit purchase. Please see your department or
the Transportation Coordinator in the Security Office to obtain the right form for you.

CAMPUS PARKING REGULATIONS
Parking permits are required to park on campus. Parking permits may be purchased at the Cashier’s
Office on the second floor of the College Center Building. To be valid, all permits must be correctly
displayed: permit number and dates clearly visible, facing out from the rearview mirror or dash.
WorkSource Client Parking is located in the South Visitor lot and western-most row of the West/Carpool
lot. Current WorkSource client permits are required for these areas.
Visitor lots are reserved for prospective students and guests of the college. Visitors must purchase a
current parking permit from the pay meter located at the booth in the lot where they parked. Permits must
be displayed clearly, face-up on dashboards. Parking is limited to 2 hours in Visitor Lots. Current
students and SCCD employees must park in designated student and employee lots only. Current SCCD
permits from Seattle Central, South Seattle and SVI are valid in the general lots at NSCC.
All-day Parking Permits cost $2 and are available at the Corliss lot parking meter for immediate use, or
purchased at the Cashier’s Office for use at a later time. All-day permits purchased at the cashier’s may
be returned for a full refund if un-used within 12 months from the date of purchase. All-day parking
permits are for use in any parking lot except for Visitor Lots, the garage and the West (Carpool) Lot
before 9:00 am.
The parking garage for NSCC employees requires an annual permit, annual reserved or a garage
carpool permit between 6 am – 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Weekdays after 5 pm, students may park
in the garage with their current quarterly permit correctly displayed. The garage closes Monday through
Thursday at 10:30 pm and at 6:00 pm on Fridays. The garage is closed all weekend.
NSCC STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF & WorkSource EMPLOYEES: Hang parking permits from
rear view mirror facing outward, or placed—visibly—face up on dash. If needed, secure permits on dash
with tape or other adhesive to prevent misplacement. Permit number and current dates must be clearly
visible. Vehicles should be locked to prevent theft and vandalism.
STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF WITH DISABLED PLACARDS/ LICENSE PLATES: NSCC
parking permits in addition to the handicapped permit are required. Students displaying BOTH a disabled
placard and a current NSCC parking permit are allowed to park in these areas at these times: 1)
anywhere in the Carpool (West) Lot at any time, if other disabled spaces are full; 2) in the garage at any
time, but only in disabled or carpool spaces; 3) disabled spaces in the East lots located in front of the
Wellness Center and the Peter Ku Education Building and in front of the Childcare Center in the North
Lot. REMEMBER: BOTH PERMITS MUST BE CLEARLY DISPLAYED.
MOTORCYCLES AND MOPEDS: Do not require a permit if parked in designated areas of the parking
garage (southwest section of the College Center Building).
Seattle Traffic code and 15 mph speed limit apply everywhere on campus.
NOTE: Violators of these regulations and those of the City of Seattle are subject to citations and
impound.

PROGRAM/SERVICE DESCRIPTION
North Seattle Community College is located in a residential neighborhood. This limits private
transportation and parking. Motorists are urged to purchase a parking permit and park on campus.
Residents of Licton Springs, North’s neighborhood, appreciate everyone driving slowly through residential
streets, lowering the volume of car radios and stereos, and parking on campus. If forced to park on city
streets, please avoid parking across driveways or lawns.
Limited parking space and the Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) Law require college officials to strongly
encourage walking, biking, carpooling or bus transportation for students and employees. Reduced bus
passes (NSCC GoPass) may be purchased by students and employees. NSCC provides CTR Program
incentives on a quarterly basis for employee walkers, bikers and carpoolers which include Guaranteed
Ride Home, shower facilities for bikers, and reduced parking for carpools. See the Transportation
Coordinator to sign-up for the CTR Program during the first 2 weeks of each quarter.
North is served by six Metro Transit bus routes: 5, 16, 75, 316, 345, and 346. Bus schedules for
these and other routes can be found at the Security/Transportation Office, in the main hallway leading to
the cafeteria in the College Center building, and in the hallway near the Cashier’s Office. Buses arrive
about every 15 minutes.
Parking permits for students are issued quarterly at the Cashier’s office. Rates vary according to the
number of credits being taken. For current rates see the Parking page.
Annual parking application forms are available at the Security Office. Full-time and part-time
employees, 50% or more of full-time (receiving benefits and paying the $10 Transportation Management
Plan fee) who wish to purchase annual parking must arrange for payroll deduction. The form must be
signed by the employee and the Transportation Coordinator for completion.
GoPass is the college’s quarterly discounted bus pass good on Metro and Sound Transit routes,
including the Sounder Train. Employee rates: $10 transportation management plan fee (TMP) and the
new fee of $30 per quarter for the GoPass. Permanent employees are encouraged to set-up a payroll
deduction through Toni Bajado at the Security Office. Hourly or part-time temporary employees choose
between purchasing the GoPass or a quarterly parking pass. See your department to complete the
transportation form before purchasing the GoPass at the Cashier’s. During 2008-09, Student rate
GoPasses are sold each quarter on a first-come, first-served basis: $10 TMP fee + $70 for students
enrolled in 10 or more credits, or $115 if less than 10 credits.
