Open Access Week @ Ayesha Abed Library BRAC University October 30, 2011 What is Open Access “Open Access (OA) literature is digital, online, original, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. Open Access removes price barriers (subscriptions, licensing fees, pay per view fees) and permission barriers for scholarly use (most copyright and licensing restrictions) and thus stands for free availability and unrestricted use of scholarly content. ” (Peter Suber) Peter Suber, A very brief introduction to Open Access http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/brief.htm Why do we need Open Access? • Research is traditionally disseminated via journal articles and conference papers • Scholarly research is not freely accessible under the traditional model of subscription based journals • Access is inequitable and based on ability to pay • Research is not being disseminated as widely as it could be Open Access Advantages and Benefits Benefits for authors • Open access provides authors with a worldwide audience • Open access increases the visibility and impact of their work • Open access widens opportunities for funding and international collaboration Benefits for libraries • In the long term Open Access may help alleviate the problem of increasing journal subscription costs • Open access helps libraries provide what their readers need • Open access helps libraries to work closely with authors and other parts of the university to make the research output more visible Benefits for universities • Increases the visibility and impact of the research being carried out in an institution • Institutional repositories provide a showcase for a University’s research • Open access is a major tool in attracting new students and staff to a university • Open access helps universities to share their knowledge and expertise Vehicles of Open Access • Institutional Repository – No peer review – Institutional or disciplinary – Preprints and postprints – Interoperable through OAI protocol – Open-source software – Easy to launch, no waiting, low investment • Open Access Journals – Peer review – More difficult to launch or convert • Other – Personal web sites, ebooks, blogs, wikis, listservs, P2P, RSS The current state of Open Access • Over 7,200 open access journals listed by the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) (October 26 2011) • Over 2100 repositories listed by the Directory of Open Access Repositories (October 10 2011) • New mandates and policies being announced regularly • Publishers engaging with open access in a variety of ways 2011-10-10 2100 repositories 2010-12-15 1800 repositories 2010-1-28 1500 repositories 2008-11-26 1200 repositories 2007-11-19 900 repositories 2006-9-5 Source: http://www.opendoar.org/ (October 26, 2011) 600 repositories 2006-3-22 300 repositories Open Access @BRACU Library Open Access Repository @BRACU Library dspace.bracu.ac.bd Total Visit per Month BRAC Business School (BBS) July 2011 Aug 2011 Sep 2011 Oct 2011 Top country views 88 55 63 131 China (90), Bangladesh (76), USA ( 37), Russian Federation (16), UK(12) Germany (9), Japan (4), Hong Kong (2), Sweden (2), Ukraine (2) 47 55 62 114 China (65) Bangladesh (44) USA (18) Russian Federation (17) Germany (14), Brazil (4),UK(4) Italy (4), Ukraine (4), Japan (3) 25 34 75 61 China (69), Bangladesh (30), USA ( 21), Russian Federation (13) Germany (8), Brazil (2), UK( 2), Sweden (2), Hong Kong (1) Iran (1) 27 35 49 51 China (66), USA( 33), Russian Federation (19), Germany (10), Bangladesh (8) UK(2), Hong Kong (2), Japan (2), Sweden (2), Kuwait (1) 21 32 39 99 * China( 87), USA( 21), Russian Federation (16), Germany (9), Bangladesh (6), UK (3), Japan (3), Ukraine (2), Canada (1), Hong Kong (1) Total Item 77 School of Engineering and Computer Science (SECS) Total Item 207 English and Humanities (ENH) Total Item 83 Institute of Governance Studies (IGS) Total Item 81 Department of Architecture Total Item 22 Total Visit per Month July 2011 Aug 2011 Sep 2011 Oct 2011 Top country views James P Grant School of Public Health (JPGSPH) Total Item 21 30 37 62 62 China (90), Bangladesh (76), USA ( 37), Russian Federation (16), UK(12),Germany (9), Japan (4), Hong Kong (2), Sweden (2), Ukraine (2) BRAC Development Institute (BDI) Total Item 20 23 33 35 76 China (87), USA (19), Russian Federation (160), Germany (14), Bangladesh (8) UK (30), Japan (2), Brazil (1), Hong Kong(1), Sweden (1) Centre for Research on Bangla Language Processing (CRBLP) Total Item 66 35 37 49 70 China (87), USA (20), Russian Federation (17), Germany (14), Bangladesh (8), Italy (3),UK (2), Japan (2), Ukraine (2), France (1) Economics and Social Sciences (ESS) Total Item 7 28 35 42 72* China (88), USA (21), Russian Federation (17), Germany (14), Bangladesh (9), Japan (4) UK( 2), Ukraine (2), Hong Kong(1), Sweden (1) Department of Mathematics and Natural Science (MNS) 19 33 42 71 China (84), USA( 20), Russian Federation (16), Germany (14), Bangladesh (5), Japan (4), Sweden (3), UK( 2), Canada (1), Hong Kong (1) Open Access @BRACU Library Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) • DOAJ - www.doaj.org - An indexing service for OA journals. - This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. - Lists 7,200 journals, Currently 3357 journals can be searched at article level - As of today 6,54,335 articles are included in the DOAJ service.
