3 Credits, Course Number: 22-003L (62196)
Meeting Time: 8:00 -10:10 am, TTh
Classroom: AC S-217
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Learn to use the elements of form and design principles to create an effective design
Develop a visual vocabulary
Think creatively and critically about art
Develop sound working habits
Learn to take and offer constructive criticism
COURSE EXPECTATIONS
Attend and work in class
Be prepared for class in terms of attitude, materials and completed research for assignments
Complete homework assignments
Clean up after yourself and help keep the room organized
Participate in class critiques and discussion
ATTENDANCE
Attendance is expected at all times. Three (3) unexcused absences are allowed without penalty.
Four absences w2ill lower the final grade by a whole letter grade – for example, from a “B” to a
“C”. Five unexcused absences will result in an “F” for the semester. An excused absence requires
official written documentation (Dean of Students, medical doctor, etc.). However, it is expected
that students attempt to make appointments at times other than class time. Homework that is
late will be marked 10% off. Excessive lack of preparation, tardiness and/or leaving early will
also affect the final grade.
ASSIGNMENT DEADLINES
All assigned work must be ready for critique or grading at the designated deadline for each
project. Anyone not exhibiting work at a preliminary or final critique will be counted absent. If a
deadline is missed by an unexcused absence, any late project will be lowered a full letter grade
and may not be redone for a higher grade.
RE-DOING PROJECTS
If you are unsatisfied with a grade earned for any project, you may rework it as many times as
you desire; however, only the highest grade earned on any single assignment will be recorded.
This policy does not apply to any project that misses a deadline.
Vocabulary test = 10%
A = Outstanding
Work = 75%
Participation = 15%
B = Above Average C = Average D = Marginal
F = Unsatisfactory
GRADE
1. Idea/Concept - appropriateness of concept, originality, depth of exploration
2. Research/Preparation - understanding of subject matter, workbook assignments,
sketches, participation in critiques, exploration, additional information, research
regarding solution elements. For example: typefaces, imagery, content, organization
3. Articulation/Technique – revisions, formal qualities, technical aptitude,
experimentation, execution, layout, clarity and idea
OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION
-Bring all of your supplies with you each day.
-Lockers (the short, reddish-brown ones) are located in the basement. Please store your stuff in
them. In this order: bring a lock, select a locker, and register it in the main 3rd floor Art Office.
- Critiques: Critiques are like exams. Don’t miss them or it will affect your project and final grade.

Assignment One
POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SHAPES
Due Thursday, September 24
Objective
Build awareness of the interaction of positive and negative shape.
Explore positive/negative alteration using texture and color contrast.
Explore the relationships between shape and pattern.
Materials and Tools
Sketchbook, pencil, acrylic paint, brushes, Exacto knife, mat board, 18” x 24” drawing pad, ruler,
Xerox machine with reduction capability (closest Photo Copying machine is in Halsey on the 2nd
floor – uses Titan Card) OR, of course, you may scan the template design and create the multiple
design on a computer – closest lab in Swart).
Vocabulary
Shape, value, positive/negative, abstraction, “organizing the rectangle,” figure/ground,
biomorphic, contrast, complementary colors, harmony/variety, geometric, form, balance,
symmetry, asymmetry, pattern
Slide Lecture: Tuesday, September 10
Class Work Schedule, Assignment One:
9/12 (Thurs.)
A. Sketchbook warm-up: shape exploration
Make 25 sketches experimenting with positive & negative shapes in a square
format (3” x 3”)
Try: simple, geometric shapes that refer to known objects, complex, biomorphic, etc.
9/17 (Tues.)
B. Positive and Negative Fluctuation – Use Acrylic Paint
Choose one of the designs you developed in (A). Refine & enlarge it to fill an 8” x 8” area.
Make 3 versions of the design – each version 8” x 8”
1 – black and white
1 – using contrasting textures – one high key and one low key
1 – in two complementary colors
Mount these versions onto a 10 ½” x 27” piece of black mat board (1” borders and 1/2” in
between and 1 ½” at the bottom)
9/19 (Thurs.)
C. Take your Black and White design. Reduce and duplicate to make a
pattern (at least 48 repetitions). Here you can use your choice of marker,
Xerox machine, or computer.
Make two very different versions – roughly 8 ½” x 11” (size is not specific
so the math does not get in the way of the duplication).
Mount these two versions onto one piece of black mat board with a 1”
border on the top and sides, ½” to 1” in between and a 1 ½” border at the
bottom.
9/24 (Tues.)
Project Due.
