VOTE NOW!--NOMINATING ELECTION
James R. Vedder (better known in the Department as "J.V.") was one of the first students to graduate with a major in
Geology from UW Oshkosh in 1967. He was killed in an auto accident in British Columbia in 1971. His family, friends
and former teachers set up a Memorial Award in his honor.
"J.V." was an enthusiastic field geologist who went on every field trip available in the Department. It is presented in
recognition and honor of this quality in undergraduate students at UW Oshkosh. The Award is given annually to a
student who has demonstrated an exceptional interest in field geology and who may need financial assistance. All
majors in either Geology or Earth Science are eligible for the Award. Selection is made by student balloting on an
evaluation sheet.
The award consists of:
1. An item of field equipment;
2. The recipient's name engraved on the plaque displayed in the Geology Department Student Lounge;
3. An engraved memento for the recipient to keep.

1. Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students.
2. Applicants must have earned at least 24 and no more than 45 credits at the time of application.(This includes all
college-level credits: CLEP, CAPP, retro, transfer, etc.) Do not count fall 2014 credits.
3. At least 24 of the credits must have been earned in residence at UW Oshkosh.
4. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25.
5. Applicants must demonstrate involvement and leadership in campus or community activities.

AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF PROFESSIONAL GEOLOGISTS - SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Professional Geologists. One program is for $1,000 awards for up to four undergraduate students. The other
program is for one award of $1,000 for a graduate student.

NSF REU WISCOSIN (LAKES PROJECT)
Don’t miss an opportunity to participate in a summer research internship with the National Science Foundation
sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site at University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie,
Wisconsin. This is the second year of this REU program. We select 10 new students each summer.
The LAKES (Linking Applied Knowledge in Environmental Sustainability) REU focuses on water quality and
phosphorus mitigation in an interdisciplinary manner over an 8 week program (June 14-August 8), with projects in
sociology, biology, economics, geology, and anthropology. Students will be provided with room and board and a
generous stipend during their participation in the LAKES program.
This program prioritizes under-represented students, pairing them with mentors in individual projects that collectively
will contribute to a more complete understanding of the dynamic interactions of our political economy, our social
networks, and our ecosystems. Reviewing of applications for the 2015 summer program will begin on February

DANIEL RAAF SCHOLARSHIP
This year is the sixth year that the Daniel W. Raaf Scholarship will be offered. Last year three students won this
$5,000 scholarship. This award is for students who have declared a major in one or more of the following areas: Art,
Computer Science, English, Foreign Languages, Geography, Geology, Biology and Microbiology, Chemistry,
Mathematics, Music, and Physics and Astronomy. Geology students are encouraged to apply for the $5,000 Daniel
Raaf Scholarship if they meet the qualifications in the application materials.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH GRANTS
The Department of Geology is pleased to announce its annual competition for undergraduate research grants. These
funds are available thanks to the C.W. Fetter Endowed Research Fund, established through gifts from Dr. Fetter,
emeritus faculty members, alumni, current faculty members, and friends. To qualify for one of these awards, which
will average $200 to $600, a student must have submitted a research grant proposal to one or more of several
undergraduate research funding sources. These grant opportunities were announced earlier in the academic year
and include GSA, Sigma Xi, and UW Oshkosh (see links below for details). The proposal must have been written by
the student, not the student’s research collaborator on the faculty. To be considered for a Geology Research Grant,
the student should submit to the Department Chair a copy of the research proposal that was submitted to one of the
above sources along with a cover letter that explains how much funding has already been received and from what
sources. This year’s deadline for submission is March 30, 2015. Proposals will be judged based upon their
scientific merit, the proposer’s academic background, and the budget justification.

2015 NEVILLE PUBLIC MUSEUM GEOLOGY CLUB SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY
This year there are two memorial scholarships available from the 2015 Neville Public Museum Geology Club. Apply
as soon as possible; deadline is March 30, 2013. All that's required is a cover letter, the form (attached), and a letter
of support from a faculty member.
The application deadline is April 1, 2015. The application is attached.

R. HARDER GALLERY OF GEMS AND MINERALS SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, Inc. is pleased to inform you of a scholarship opportunity for
geology majors. The R. Harder Gallery of Gems and Minerals Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 to support
the mission of the R. Harder Gallery, and in honor of 33 years of service Ron Harder provided to Jewelers Mutual
Insurance Company before his retirement, including 25 years as CEO.
Eligible students are geology majors who graduated from a high school in the Fox Valley region who have completed
two years of college coursework and achieved a minimum cumulative 2.5 grade point average. The scholarship
award is $1,500 and is paid at the beginning of the junior or senior year of college to the school the student is
attending.
A selection committee will review all applications and meet to determine up to two recipients. All students submitting
a scholarship application will be notified of the committee’s decision.

AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY – MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING
The Museum is pleased to offer an innovative Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program that leverages its unique
scientific resources and long history of leadership in teacher education and professional development. Funded in part
by the New York State Department of Education and the National Science Foundation, this 15-month program
addresses a critical shortage of qualified science teachers in New York State, particularly in high-needs schools with
diverse populations. The MAT program is a partnership with four schools in New York City and Yonkers. Developed
and delivered in the context of a natural history museum, the program integrates academic theory and learning with
application in a school setting, with a specialization in Earth Science for grades 7-12.
