REEF
The great barrier reef is located in northeastern Australia. It stretches along
Queensland coastline at the tip of Cape
York Peninsula to Bundaberg in the south.
HISTORY
(background information)
 The barrier reef was formed by dead corals generations after
another in the end they formed a great wall of stone. After the
wall was formed living organisms started to form like coral,
algae, anemones, sponges, fish, worms, starfish, turtles,
molluscs, snakes, crustaceans and other extraordinary
creatures.

The first evidence of Europeans sighting the Great Barrier Reef
was French on 6 June 1768.But they did not sail the whole of
the barrier reef and they missed Australia. The first person to
actually sailed along the whole of the barrier reef is James
cook.
Why So Famous?
 It is home to over 1500 species of fish, about 400
species of corals, 4000 species of molluscs, 215 species
of birds, 6 species of sea turtles .
 It has a rich diversity of marine life, including the
beautiful natural colours.
 It is also a water paradise for divers and snorkelers.
Interesting facts
 The great barrier reef can be seen from outer space.
 It is the largest great barrier reef in the world.
 The great barrier reef is composed of 900 islands.
 It is one of the seven wonders of the world.
 About 10% of the worlds fish if found in the great barrier
reef.
