Exercises:
1) Single tensile bar in Ansys. Solution, displacements, and stress processing.
Take an 8” long .2” x .2” square section aluminum beam, load in tension to 1000 lb. Find the deflection
and stress of the beam. [a. Manually build a 2 element model. b. Construct a line, and mesh with 5
elements.]
2) Two dimensions – in-plane bending – beam analysis
Ti beam, 12” long, 2” high, .1” thick, 1000 lb end load [Make an area, use the mesher to vary meshes]
Closed form solution – (Roark): defl=WL^3/3EI = .54”
Stress = Mc/I = 180,000
Then: 2D plane stress FEA of the beam
Model in 2d – what is needed for convergence? Trias, vs quads. Low order vs high order elems.
Effect of boundary condition (latent singularity as the problem is posed – even in some texts!)
Also – model in 3d – compare tet element results with bricks
