Lawrence Chan MANE-6960 Friction and Wear HW 1 10/4/12 1. The surface and near surface regions of a solid material are affected by environmental conditions and manufacturing processes. Any bulk material must go through processing before having an useful shape. This processing will affect the outer layer of a material and is shown in the first two regions closest to the bulk material, the Worked Layer and the Beilby Layer. The last two layers are generated because of the environment. Chemical interactions between the Worked and Beilby Layers with the atmosphere lead to formation of an oxide layer and an absorbed gases layer. These outermost layers are dependent on the environment the innermost layers are exposed to. 2. Profilometers promote their ability to measure surfaces of various transparencies, angles and most importantly roughness. Some models can measure higher resolution to find more valleys and hills than others. Many are now non-contact, therefore reducing risk of damaging the surface during measurement. There is also options for a more automatic measuring system that interfaces with pre programmed software. Portability is also a consideration as some companies highlight spare batteries, carrying cases low weight and even a profilometer that you can place onto a surface during analysis. This will greatly aid in taking measurements from large surfaces where a sample cannot be taken to a lab.
