Debra Johnson received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North
Texas in 1980. While at UNT, Ms. Johnson received a Rotary International Award and studied organ with Harald Vogel at the Norddeutsche Orgelakadamie in Germany. Ms.
Johnson is a certified Kodaly specialist and has taught music at Leon Heights Elementary in Belton since 1998. The Leon Heights Honor Choir performed for the Belton ISD
Teacher of the Year luncheon in 2009 and 2010. In 2008 the choir participated in the
Temple College performance of John Rutter’s Mass of the Children. The choir also performed for the Belton Employee Appreciation Banquet in 2010. Under Ms. Johnson’s direction, the choir has performed at both the East Texas Children’s Choral Festival and
Sandy Lake Fun Fest.
Ms. Johnson is active in the community as a substitute organist for several churches.
Ms. Johnson is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Choral
Directors Association, the Organization of American Kodaly Educators, and the Kodaly
Educators of Texas. She is active in the Texas Music Educators Association where she serves as the Elementary Chair of TMEA Region 8.
