ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE) AND GED PREPARATION The mission of Adult Basic Education and GED Preparation Program is to prepare students with the knowledge and skills to successfully take the GED exam. Students will receive skills in communication, information processing, critical thinking and reading, and problem solving. Emphasis is also placed on students entering the workplace or continuing in higher education. Adult Education is a partnership of programs through Temple College that focuses on the adult student. It offers GED preparation, Literacy Development, and English as a Second Language proficiency classes at no cost to the students. The goal of the program is to assist adults in becoming productive, competent, and adaptable members of their global and highly technical society. Temple College Adult Education GED classes at Temple College run Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or 6:00-9:00 p.m. Students must first attend an orientation and then may attend classes as their schedules allow so long as they meet minimum time requirements. Students will work at their own pace with individualized lesson plans that adequately and intentionally prepare them to pass their GED. Belton The Belton location offers GED classes and basic literacy classes in an individualized and selfpaced format. This program is located in the Belton ISD District AEP building, 400 N. Wall. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) ESL for Adults is a program where adults learning English as a Second Language can improve their English communication skills with help from instructors and community volunteers. Classes focus on different language skills depending on each student’s English abilities, interests, and needs. The ESL program focuses on conversational English, grammar, reading, listening, comprehension, writing and vocabulary. ESL students enjoy small class sizes and a personalized approach to learning. This program is not only an opportunity for language learning, but also for cultural exchange and understanding. ESL classes are located at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 707 South 7th St., Temple. The program provides all levels of instruction to students wishing to learn English. Classes meet Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. Students must first attend an orientation and then will be placed into the appropriate class level to best begin or further develop their English speaking skills. Outcomes Adult Basic Education addresses a variety of learner goals. ABE helps learners to: Attain employment and/or better their current employment Achieve high school equivalency (GED) Attain skills necessary to enter post-secondary education and training Exit public welfare and become self-sufficient Learn to speak and write the English language Master basic academic skills to help their children succeed in school Become U.S. citizens and participate in democratic society Gain self-esteem, personal confidence and sense of personal and civic responsibility
