Dear Prospective Student Thank you for your interest in the Temple College Dental Hygiene Program. We are pleased that you are considering Temple College, and we invite you to visit our campus. The Dental Hygiene Program at Temple College is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, American Dental Association. The Dental Hygiene Program commences in the summer semester each year and takes approximately two years of full time study to complete. The program leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree in Dental Hygiene. Enrollment is limited to twelve (12) incoming students each year, and admission is competitive. Applications for admission in the Summer 2014 are currently being accepted. Note that even if you applied in the past, you will need to submit a new application to be considered for the class beginning in the Summer of 2014. Many of your questions regarding our program can be answered by reading the enclosed material. Introductory information sessions will be conducted for prospective applicants at 4 p.m. on the second Monday in the months of January, February, March (the March session will take place the first Monday of the month if the second Monday falls during Spring Break), April, June, July, September, October and November. Sessions take place in the Health Sciences Center, Located on the East Campus of Temple College. It is required that you attend one information session before applying to our program. You will receive the actual application for admission at the information session. Plan to spend about one hour at the information session. No appointment is necessary. We strongly urge you to attend an information session early in your preparation. Our program admission criteria are specific and require sequential planning. The Dental Hygiene Program uses a selective admission process. Students are selected by a Dental Hygiene Admissions Committee that considers criteria such as Accuplacer scores, pre-entrance departmental aptitude test, overall college grade point average, prerequisite science GPA, and interview. The number of students admitted each year is limited because of classroom, laboratory and clinic space, regulating agency requirements, and student-teacher ratios. The admission process is competitive and uses criteria indicative of probable success in the program. A point system is used for selection. The admission committee ranks students according to points received in the program admission criteria. The deadline for applications each year is February 15TH. All prerequisite coursework MUST be completed by the deadline. PROGRAM ADMISSION CRITERIA Applicants must meet the following requirements: 1. Graduated from high school or passed the GED. 2. Be eligible for readmission to college(s) previously attended. 3. Be eligible for readmission to health science program(s) previously attended, if applicable. 4. Attend a pre-application Dental Hygiene Program information session. 5. Submit an admissions application and be admitted to Temple College. 6. Submit all official college transcripts, including satisfactory completion of prerequisite courses and mathematics competency demonstration to Temple College Director of Admissions and the Dental Hygiene Program Director. 7. Pass all three sections of the Accuplacer. Scores must be official and submitted to the department in a stamped and sealed envelope. 8. Pass the pre-entrance departmental aptitude test, the Health Occupations Basic Admissions Test V (HOBET V). Scores must be official and submitted to the department in a stamped and sealed envelope. 9. Submit an admissions application to the Dental Hygiene Program. 10. Submit a Temple College Dental Hygiene Program Observation Form. Verification of sixteen hours of observation in two different dental practice facilities if the applicant has never been employed in a dental practice. For those applicants that have been employed in a dental practice, the employer must verify employment. Your application will not be processed if any of the stated Program Admission Criteria are missing or incomplete. Rev.2/1/13.rl INFORMATION SESSION – MANDATORY An introductory information session will be conducted for prospective applicants at 4:00 PM on the second Monday in the months of January, February, **March, April, June, July, September , October and November of each year in the Health Sciences Center, East Campus, Temple College. These sessions will help answer any questions applicants may have about the program and the admissions process. Plan to spend approximately one hour at the information sessions. No appointment or reservation is necessary. Applicants will receive an application at the information session. **When the second Monday in March occurs during Spring Break, the Information Session will be conducted on the First Monday. ACCUPLACER Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for all three sections of the Accuplacer – reading (73), writing (5/80) and mathematics (63) to be considered for admission to the Dental Hygiene Program. All scores will be factored into the applicant’s composite score. All scores must come to the department in a sealed and stamped envelope. Applicants must take a pre-entrance departmental aptitude test, the Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test V (HOBET V). The score on the HOBET V will be factored in the applicant’s composite score. Information about HOBET V is provided at the information session. All scores must come to the department in a sealed and stamped envelope. TEMPLE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS APPLICATION Applicants must file a Temple College Admissions Application with the Admissions & Records Office. The application must be complete and contain the applicant’s current mailing address. Refer to Temple College Catalog for more information. Prospective students will receive an application at the information session. DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM ADMISSIONS APPLICATION Applicants must file a Temple College Dental Hygiene Admissions Application with the Dental Hygiene Program Director. The application must be complete and contain the applicant’s current mailing address. OFFICIAL COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS Applicants must order official transcript to be sent to the Temple College Admission & Records office AND the Dental Hygiene Program Director. Transcripts from all colleges/universities, or other educational institutions should be included. Official transcripts must include the satisfactory completion of Dental Hygiene Program prerequisite courses. Applicants must have a minimum grade of “C” or better in each course. A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 is required for admission. Applicants must demonstrate competency in fundamental mathematical skills by a placement test score of a minimum performance level in elementary algebra (Accuplacer). TESTING The Commission on Dental Accreditation, American Dental Association, requires all students admitted to a dental hygiene program take and pass a standardized test, even if you are TSI-exempt. The Dental hygiene Program DOES NOT ACCEPT high school exit examination scores, Compass, Asset, “B or better” developmental courses, prior military service or existing degree exemptions. Scores must come from the institution where the assessment was taken. Tests that are required for application to the program are: Accuplacer - This test may be taken at the Temple College Testing Center or other recognized institution. Applicants must pass all three sections of this test to be considered for the program. The cost of the test is $25.00 Results must be submitted in a sealed envelope with the testing center stamp on the seal. Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test (HOBET V) – The HOBET V is available at the Temple College Testing Center of other recognized institution. The test is available on a walk-in basis from 8AM to 3PM Monday through Thursday. For Friday appointments, call the Testing Center at (254) 298-8586. The applicant must achieve a composite score of at least 60 to qualify for the Dental hygiene Program. Students are allowed to retest one additional time during each application period if they do not achieve the minimal score on their first attempt. The cost of the test is $40.00 Study guides are available for the HOBET V at the Temple College Bookstore, located in the Arnold Student Center. GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA) Grades are extremely important in the calculation of your total points. You must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 and a “C” or better in each prerequisite course. In addition, your prerequisite science GPA will be calculated and added as a separate score. Rev.2/1/13.rl INTERVIEW The top applicants will be asked to interview with the Dental Hygiene Admissions Committee. The purpose of the interview is to determine which applicants will be offered positions in the incoming class and which will be placed on the alternate list. An interview does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Each interview will be scheduled for 20 minutes. The interview will include a writing component and manual dexterity component. The interview score will be added to the applicant’s preliminary score. The 12 applicants with the highest composite scores will be offered positions in the incoming class; the next eight will be placed on the alternate list. All applicants will be notified of their status by March 15th . CONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE Applicants must: 1. Provide evidence of pre-entry physical and visual acuity examination to include proof of required immunizations. The Dental Hygiene Program has certain minimum physical and health requirements which every successful applicant must meet. 2. Complete an online certified background check through the department. ALTERNATE STATUS Alternate status is awarded to some applicants who meet all requirements but do not rank in the top 12. In the event of a vacancy, the alternates will be notified according to their ranking on the alternate list. REAPPLICATION If you are not selected for the Dental Hygiene Program, you may re-apply to the Program. You will not be required to repeat the information sessions or observation requirement; however, you will need to submit a new application and updated transcripts. All prerequisite courses must be taken within five years of the application deadline. APPLICATION DEADLINE The deadline for applying to the Temple College Dental Hygiene Program is February15th of each year. By March 15st the Program Director will send a notice of acceptance, alternate status, or rejection to each applicant who has submitted all necessary Program Admission Criteria. Accepted applicants will have until March 5th to notify the Program Director in writing of the applicant’s intention. CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK Students must complete a criminal background check prior to entry into the program. Students with any infractions that would prohibit state licensure will not be accepted into the Dental Hygiene Program. The cost of the background check is approximately $40.00 CLINIC INSTRUMENT FEE Students accepted into the Dental Hygiene program will be required to make a $500.00 deposit when entering the program in the summer session toward their first dental instruments. Rev.2/1/13.rl COMPLIANCE WITH BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN STANDARDS AND OTHER REGULATORY POLICIES Temple College Dental Hygiene Program complies with all institutional, local, state and federal regulations involving blood borne pathogens and infectious diseases, ionizing radiation, and hazardous materials. Students in the Dental Hygiene Program will follow all CDC, OSHA, and other infectious disease policies to protect themselves and their patients from occupational exposures to these potential hazards. The applicant should be aware that the profession of Dental Hygiene is classified as an OSHA Category I risk level for blood borne pathogens. JOB OPPORTUNITIES Employment opportunities for the registered Dental hygienist are subject to current economic and population conditions. Graduates are not guaranteed employment following graduation. To date, all Temple College graduates have found employment opportunities available, although not necessarily full time employment.
