Dear Prospective Student
Thank you for your interest in the Temple College Dental Hygiene Program. We are pleased that you are considering
Temple College, and we invite you to visit our campus.
The Dental Hygiene Program at Temple College is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation,
American Dental Association. The Dental Hygiene Program commences in the summer semester each year and takes
approximately two years of full time study to complete. The program leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree
in Dental Hygiene. Enrollment is limited to twelve (12) incoming students each year, and admission is competitive.
Applications for admission in the Summer 2012 are currently being accepted. Note that even if you applied in the
past, you will need to submit a new application to be considered for the Summer of 2012.
Many of your questions regarding our program can be answered by reading the enclosed material. Introductory
information sessions will be conducted for prospective applicants at 4 p.m. on the second Monday in the months of
January, February, March (the March session will take place the first Monday of the month if the second Monday falls
during Spring Break), April, June, July, September, October and November. Sessions take place in the Health Sciences
Center, Located on the East Campus of Temple College. Attendance at one of these information sessions is
required: you will receive the actual application at the information session. Plan to spend about one hour at the
information session. No appointment is necessary. We strongly urge you to attend an information session early in
your preparation. Do not wait until the “last minute.” Our program admission criteria are specific and require
sequential planning.
Please feel free to call us for any additional information at (254) 298-8678 (1-800-460-4636, ext: 8678). We are
happy to assist you in preparing your application.
Sincerely,

Dental Hygiene Program
Admission to Temple College does not imply or guarantee admission to the Dental Hygiene Program. The Dental
Hygiene Program uses a selective admission process. Students are selected by a Dental Hygiene Admissions
Committee that considers criteria such as THEA scores, pre-entrance departmental aptitude test, overall college
grade point average, prerequisite science GPA, and interview.
The number of students admitted each year is limited because of classroom, laboratory and clinic space, regulating
agency requirements, and student-teacher ratios.
The admission process is competitive and uses criteria indicative of probable success in the program. A point system
is used for selection. The admission committee ranks students according to points received in the program
admission criteria.
The deadline for applications each year is January 20th. All prerequisite coursework MUST be completed by the
deadline.
PROGRAM ADMISSION CRITERIA
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
1. Graduated from high school or passed the GED.
2. Be eligible for readmission to college(s) previously attended.
3. Be eligible for readmission to health science program(s) previously attended, if applicable.
4. Attend a pre-application Dental Hygiene Program information session.
5. Submit an admissions application and be admitted to Temple College.
6. Submit all official college transcripts, including satisfactory completion of prerequisite courses and
mathematics competency demonstration to Temple College Director of Admissions and the Dental
Hygiene Program Director.
7. Pass all three sections of the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) examination or an appropriate

TESTING
The Commission on Dental Accreditation, American Dental Association, requires all students admitted to a dental

selection:
1.
THEA or appropriate alternative. (Accuplacer, ACT or SAT can be taken in lieu of THEA. The Dental
Hygiene Program DOES NOT ACCEPT high school exit examination scores, Compass, Asset , “B or
better” developmental courses, prior military service, or existing degree exemptions.) Scores must
come from the institution where the assessment was taken.
2.
HOBET: pre-entrance departmental aptitude test. See attached information regarding HOBET
testing. Scores must come from institution.
GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)
Grades are extremely important in the calculation of your total points. You must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5
and a “C” or better in each prerequisite course. In addition, your prerequisite science GPA must have been taken
within the last 5 years and will be calculated and added as a separate score.

interview is to determine which applicants will be offered positions in the incoming class and which will be placed on
the alternate list. An interview does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Each interview will be scheduled
for 20 minutes. The interview will include a writing component and manual dexterity component. The interview
score will be added to the applicant’s preliminary score.

be placed on the alternate list. All applicants will be notified of their status by March 1.
