Proceedings of the 9th Annual ISC Graduate Research Symposium ISC-GRS 2015 April 27, 2015, Rolla, Missouri EXPERIMENTAL CHARACTERIZATION OF SUBWAVELENGTH QUASI-PERIODIC METAL-DIELECTRIC STACKS Zhigang Li, Lei Sun, Xiaodong Yang and Jie Gao Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, MO 65409, USA ABSTRACT The Thue-Morse (ThM) metal-dielectric stack, one type of the quasi-periodic multilayer stack, is theoretically and experimentally investigated in the present work. It is found that the band structure of ThM multilayer stack is dramatically distinguished from the periodic stack which consists of the same metal and dielectric subwavelength layers but with different lattice sequence. For the ThM multilayer stack, two resonant modes are predicted in theory and experimentally proved in the transmission spectra. Larger influence on the inverse reflection spectra due to different lattice sequence has been observed, compared with the periodic stack. Different propagation modes and the corresponding electric field distributions are examined in the finite element method (FEM) simulation spectra. 1
