Course Content & Summary – What will students know and be able to do after this course?
Process of Science: Design and/or conduct a controlled experiment. Design and/or interpret data.
Biochemistry: Diagram and label the parts of an atom. Describe the chemistry that produces the properties of water. Make a list of
the properties and illustrate how each affects organisms in aquatic and terrestrial environments. Explain the importance of buffers to
the pH of living things. List the macromolecules with their building blocks and examples and describe their value to living things.
Cells and Membranes: List the parts and functions of cells and explain how those parts work together as a cell. Be able to predict
the direction that water will move across the membrane of plant and animal cells under various conditions.
Energy: Describe how the processes of photosynthesis, cellular respiration, glycolysis and fermentation provide energy for living
things. Explain how ATP and enzymes are vital to life processes.
DNA, RNA, Protein Synthesis: Diagram the structure of DNA and illustrate how this lends it to replication and transcription into
RNA. Explain how the genetic code is translated into the protein that results in genetic traits.
Cell Division: Describe the movement of chromosomes that allow cells to divide correctly during binary fission, mitosis and
meiosis. Predict the outcome for an organism if chromosomes divide incorrectly. Describe cell-cycle control and its relation to
cancer.
Genetics: Demonstrate an understanding of the mechanisms of genetics by solving genetics problems and creating or interpreting
pedigrees.
Evolution: List and describe the lines of evidence for and the mechanisms of evolution including examples.
Survey of Life: Bacteria, Viruses, Protists, Fungi, Plants, Animals: Draw and label the parts and functions of bacteria and
viruses. Describe how each proliferates and the benefits and diseases associated with humans. List the characteristics used to
classify life. Match examples to the correct group. List the features that illustrate evolutionary history.
Required Materials – What will students need to bring to class?
Textbook, homework, 3-Ring ClearView binder-1”, red pen, sharpened pencils with erasers, lined loose leaf paper, 3-ring pocket
dividers, 3-ring pencil pocket, dry-erase marker (dark color), highlighter, ear buds for computer lab work. You may want your own
inexpensive calculator.
Together, we will demonstrate respect, responsibility, and trustworthiness by following these policies:
You will be expected to adhere to the building policies and procedures listed in your student handbook and discussed during advisory
at the beginning of the school year. Classroom procedures consistent with the building policies will be developed, taught and
modeled at the beginning of each term.
Reporting & Additional Information – Specific course related procedures:
Weebly: Course specific information must be accessed and printed by students at this site. Students are expected to come to class
prepared with their assignment sheet, learning objectives and miscellaneous print work. (http://loydbiology.weebly.com)
Thank you for choosing this course!
What we will do is important, you can do it, and we won’t give up until you get it!
