Intermediate French I Review and extend the skills of listening, reading, speaking, and writing for purposes of communication using a variety of technological learning aids. Directed towards linguistic and cultural awareness. Special emphasis on extension and application of listening and reading skills strategies using various authentic sources. Goal Area 8: Global Perspectives Develop a comparative perspective and understanding of one’s place in a global context. Classroom materials address topics where students are exposed to other places in the world , from everyday situations (i.e. eating habits, shopping for food or clothing) to more complex subjects (immigration, housing, education, economic development, political and human right issues in the rest of the world). 13. In order for a course to be designated as fulfilling Goal Area 8, it must address at least 4 of the 5 student learning outcomes (SLOs) below. Students regularly analyze linguistic and cultural differences and similarities that exist in distinct regions of the French-speaking world, and they also compare those variations to English and US culture. #2. Comparative observation/reaction activities focus on global places and populations where French is spoken, in the context of contemporary cultural approaches to the development of such countries. Students regularly identify and describe the linguistic, ethnic and cultural variations that exist in the French-speaking world, and they also compare those variations to English and US culture. #3. Students listen to Francophone speakers (short audio-segments), as they reflect on their own cultural identities and their experiences studying and 12/11/2009 working in other countries. Students discuss and analyze how political, economic or cultural elements influence relations among countries in the French-speaking world and between those countries and the US. #4. Students discuss how international issues such as human rights, war, deforestation, global climate change, and globalization manifest themselves in the French-speaking world and compare hypothetical reactions and positions to those issues. They elaborate short topics for discussion in small groups or elaborate short surveys among their peers on campus,in the context of developing their own understanding of global perspectives. #5.Students Identify situations favorable to discussion on topics of individual and social responsibility, through role playing or videosegments. 15.
