Prereq: 101 or permission of instructor. 3 Cr. ALT. 8. Indicate the clientele for whom this course is designed. Is the course for general education only, or does it fulfill general education and other program needs for this or another department? Obtain signatures from any affected departments. This course can be taken by any SCSU undergraduate student seeking to take a Liberal Education course that staisfies Goal Area 8. The course will also fulfill the needs of the Political Science Department and the International Relations Program in serving as an elective course under the area of Comparative Politics. 9. Goal Area 8: Global Perspectives Develop a comparative perspective and understanding of one’s place in a global context. This course will look at the history and politics of the Middle East allowing students to develop an understanding of Middle Eastern politics and how that relates to the West in general and the United States in particular. The course will focus on clarifying the connections the Middle East has to the United States particularly when it comes to topics such as U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, the two Gulf Wars, dependency on Oil, and American military bases and deployments in the Middle East. 13. In order for a course to be designated as fulfilling Goal Area 8, it must address at least 4 of the 5 student learning outcomes (SLOs) below. Students will explore how American foreign policy has and continues to play a role in the events of the Middle East and how events in the Middle East can have an impact on the interests and national security of the United States. 2-Describe similarities and differences among global places and populations. Students will learn about the unique tribal and religious structures in the Middle East and the emergence of the modern nation state system in the Middle East which mirrors the nation state structures of the West. 3-Analyze how political, economic or cultural elements influence relations among the world's states, peoples, or societies. Students will learn about the legacy of colonialism in the Middle East, the rise of Arab Nationalism and later Islamism, and how all these forces shape the relationships between countries of the Middle East and between the Middle East and the West. 4-Analyze specific international issues and propose and evaluate responses. 12/11/2009 Students will analyze a number of international issues related to the Middle East such as the Arab Israeli conflict, the rise of radical nationalist or religious political movements, the failure of the nation-state system, and the lack of democracy and transparency in government. Part of class discussions will revolve around identifying solutions and responses to these problems on both the national, regional, and international levels. 15.
