Vista Murrieta Cross Country Team attended the Laguna Hills
Invitational for its 4th year in a row. The team was awarded the
Lynch Award in a short ceremony before the race. The award
was presented to Vista Murrieta Cross Country Team for having
finished the 2008 Invitational with the top 5 Boys and Girls
times of the entire race. The Laguna Hills Invitational is host to
over 60 Cross Country Teams from Southern California Area.
This year top runners from Vista Murrieta on the 3 mile course
were Senior Drew Dalton with a time of 15:09 first place in
the Div. I Senior Boys, Porter Reddish 1st place Frosh of 16:18.
The Girls team had some outstanding performances from
Freshman Sarah Benson First Place 19:20; Sophomore
Nicaela Hernandez 19 flat taking 3rd .
The Broncos had a great performance from both the boys and girls
teams. Vista Murrieta Varsity Girls team is looking forward to a
great year with the return of Sophomore Erika Reddish, Sr.
Michelle Hernandez, Soph. Nicaela Hernandez, Sr. Holli
Erickson and Soph. Mady Koosa. Some very talented new
runners will also join the team for the first year, Fr. Sarah
Benson, Jr. Brooke McCandless, Fr. Brooke Evans and Sr.
Jessica McCarthy.
The Boys will be lead by Seniors Drew Dalton and Bryce
Rausa. Both helped lead last years team to a Southwestern
League Championship in 2008 and a 7th place finish at State.
Although the boys team lost 4 of the top performers from last
years Championship team, they are working hard to rebuild and
the team is seeing some strong individuals stepping up to the plate
like Freshman Porter Reddish, Jr. Matt Peng and Jr. Yael
Espinal Ochoa, Jr. Jared Balady and Sr. Michael Stewart.
Gatorade Athletes: Sarah Benson, Drew Dalton & Porter
Reddish 1st place. Carleen Taylor & Jon Meisterling, huge
improvement.
WOODBRIDGE INVITATIONAL
9-19-09
Broncos showed up to the Woodbridge Invitational this year with
great anticipation of a great day and they weren’t disappointed.
While the girls Varsity Team was denied an opportunity to
compete in the rated race, they stepped into the Varsity Race ready
to shake things up and show their speed and strength. The girl’s
team was missing top runners Erika Reddish and Michelle
Hernandez, but in true Bronco fashion they stepped up and had
an overwhelming performance, with the top 5 runners finishing
with times under 19:00 to take a commanding FIRST PLACE IN
THE VARSITY GOLD RACE. Lead by Sophomore Nicaela
Hernandez 2nd place 17:47, Fr. Sarah Benson 5th, 17:56; Fr.
Brooke Evans 12th, 18:25; Sr. Holli Erickson 18:49 and Soph.
Mady Koosa 18:52. Brooke McCandless 19:01 and Jessica
McCarthy 19:16; had better than expected performances coming
off 3 to 4 weeks of injury. The team finished with a score of 77
points, with the next best team at 109. Their overall performance
landed them in 16th place.
Boys Varsity is working overtime to step up into some pretty big
shoes left from last years Seniors. Racing this year in the BOYS
RATED RACE, the team placed 5th, just 1 point from rival
make this happen. Your skills in cards, singing, dancing, cooking and
comedy make this trip a big hit. Coach Frank and Mrs. Hecox, your
open invitation to the Cabin and the traditional Pancake Breakfast is
something we enjoy and look forward to each year.
(Woodbridge Cont.)
school Great Oak. The boy’s team was lead by a great performance from Sr.
Bryce Rausa, taking 1st 14:40!! Bryce Rausa and Drew Dalton lead the race
through the 2nd mile with Drew battling a sickness and taking 12 with a time of
15:05, followed by a strong showing from Fr. Porter Reddish 15:25; JR’s.
Matt Peng 15:54 and Yael Espinal Ochoa 16:03. The boy’s team has a big job
ahead of them, but they are proving they are up for the task as they took 15th
place out of the entire Woodbridge meet!
Other great performances of the day included Soph. Carleen Taylor 19:43,
Ray Villalobos 16:03 and New PR for ADAM DONASON 16:39! WOW!!!
Gatorade Athletes: Nicaela Hernandez 2nd place, overcoming a foot issue.
Nice kick at the end!!!
Tiana Barnes: Way to hang in there!! Injury after injury, a great example of
perseverance in the face of adversity.
Bryce Rausa: He can run, I knew it!! 14:40, 1st Place in Rated Race and 15th
OVERALL!
Adam Donason 16:39 improves 1:26 and Gus Sjobeck 17:22 improves 2:44

overcoming injury and being a great example of focus and hard work
during injury recovery workouts.

Great Job!!!!!!! Bronco’s Rock!!!!!!!
1st League Race @ Plateau
10-1-09
After a crazy series of events we finally were able to compete in our first
Southwestern League Race of the year. The race was originally scheduled for last
Thursday and was canceled after extreme heat of temps over 103. And, if that
wasn’t enough, a fire broke out to add to the day. Murrieta rescheduled for
Thursday October 1st and it was a great day! The weather was perfect, and
although the race was a bit crowded, to say the least, all in all it was a good day
for the Broncos!
Inland Empire Challenge
10/10/09
Every year our Bronco team is faced with new challenges and
this year it seems to be sickness. We have had our share of bumps
and bruises, but the biggest challenge of the Inland Empire race is
sickness. Several of our runners have been out with bronchitis or
flu, and are either just getting back or just catching the bug. Either
way, this is where the tough get going. We have found that with
each race when someone has been down, someone else is there to
step up. After finally nailing down the location of the IEC, which
was changed last minute due to fires in the mountains, the Broncos
were off to a new location, Prado Dam Regional Park.
Girls Varsity has been hit hard with flu and injury. This is the
first race of the season for Erika, and as she steps up, Nicaela,
Brooke Mc Candless, Sarah Benson and Brooke Evans are out
with sickness. That’s o.k.… you can’t rattle these girls! Erika
stepped up and ran better than one could expect- 18:02, just
missing 1st place. Jessica McCarthy 18:23, Michelle Hernandez
was back from sickness, and ran well for her first time back, with
18:28, followed by Holli Erickson who has been nursing a pulled
hamstring 18:33, a solid runner for us Madyson Koosa who also
has been nursing injury 18:44 and a step up stellar performance by
Tiana Barnes, who seems to be getting stronger each race, with
18:45. What a great performance from such a battered team.
These girls are a tough group and pull together to get the job done.
The girls took 1st place with a score of 48 and a spread of 42
sec.
Girls JV had great performances from Alison Shelton, who
also has been overcoming health challenges. Allison took 1st
place in the Sophomore race with a time of 19:07, followed by
Carleen Taylor in 4th place 19:50. Sarah Benson, normally
running Varsity, ran in the Freshman race (she too was recovering
from illness) and ran a tempo workout, taking 1st place with a time
of 19:04, followed by Marilyn Triviso, (First time race) 4th
place at 19:45!
Beaten up, sick, sore, and recovering Broncos got a lift from the few that have
been able to avoid sickness and injury. We took first place in both the Boys and
Girls Varsity Races, which helped the Broncos finish in 2 nd place overall.
Boy’s team finally had a healthy Drew Dalton, who had been
fighting bronchitis the last couple of weeks. Both Drew and
Bryce ran great, with Drew taking 1st in sweeps 14:45, and
Bryce with 14:50. Freshman Porter Reddish gets stronger and
stronger finishing 12th, followed by a solid performance from a
sick Yael Espinal 15:40. Ray Villalobos and Jared Balady
continue to step up with each race, and will be key performers
with this team. Boys Varsity team finished 2nd place in Sweeps.
Bryce Rausa, 1st place for the Boys Varsity team 15:55 followed by Freshman
Porter Reddish, 7TH 16:32. A very sick Drew Dalton 16:57, Ray Villalobos
16:59, Matt Peng 17:01, another sick one-Yael Espinal 17:08 and Jared
Balady 17:48. Varsity took 2nd and is in good position going into the second
league race.
Boys JV team stepped up and had a great race, taking 2nd
place with a spread of only 25sec. Gus Sjobeck is running crazy
good, and finished with a time of 16:57, followed by Austin
Sorensen 17:08, Jonathan Lloyd 17:19, Marc Diaz 17:25, and
John Meisterling 18:01.
Congratulations to Nicaela Hernandez. Nica took 1st in the girls Varsity race
beating out Great Oak with a time of 18:44. Nica has been training well and it
showed with her strong finish at league. Now that she has had a taste of finishing
1st it looks as though she now has the eye of the tiger as she runs with great
conviction and a will to win. Jr. Brooke McCandless 9th. Brooke had her break
out run since coming off the DL(disabled list) with a time of 19:32. Brooke
Evans 14th 20:07, Mady Koosa(Mad Dog) 15th @ 20:08 Sarah Benson
20:14. Holli Erickson 20:29 and Michelle Hernandez 20:47. All of these girls
have been or are currently fighting injury or sickness and did a great job in our
1st league race.

SWL 2nd LEAGUE RACE
@ Temecula Valley High School
10/15/09
Hey, did they say there was a hill on this course?? What hill? We
LOVE HILLS!!!! Bryce and Drew tore it up!
Yet again… someone stepped up! Varsity Girls had Erika Reddish back
for the first time, and had a sick Nicaela, Brooke Evans and Sarah
Benson and Holli nursing a pulled hamstring. No problem! Jessica
McCarthy and Michelle stepped up and Nicaela pushed through her
sickness to finish just 1 point behind Chaparral to take 3 rd. After two
League races Broncos are tied for 2nd in League, and are feeling
confident about getting the job done at league finals.
Girls JV finished in a strong 2nd place. Brooke McCandless ran JV for
the race as she was recovering from sickness. Tiana Barnes had another
great performance coming off a stellar finish at IEC. Kendra Knaus did
a great job, considering she has been bothered by a bad ITband all
season. No complaints, she just keeps on going!!
Varsity Boys came in second. Bryce and Drew dominated the race
coming in 1-2. Porter Reddish continues to be a dominant freshman, and
is our strong #3 runner. Ray keeps on stepping up. Good job Ray! The
Varsity team will enter into the finals in second place, and have their
eyes set on a 1st place finish.
JV Boys have another freshman who has been making a strong move to
the top. Jeomar Muro, who finished with a time of 16:47 came in 7 th .
Gus Sjobeck continues to improve, and has been a great leader on the
JV team. Justin Frances ran well, just crushing the down hills! The JV
team will also go to league finals in 2nd place!
Mt. Sac 2009
10/24/2009
What great day. The weather was the best ever and the team was amazing.
Things started a bit different this year with our JV teams running on Friday.
Kaylee Howard and Amanda Dilbeck were the only girls running and Kaylee
took it upon herself to make sure everyone knew Vista Murrieta was in the
house, by taking 1st place with a PR of 20:12!!! The next girl was 45 seconds
behind. Kaylee Howard, now that you have come in 1st place, where are you
going?? I know, Disneyland!!! Good for you!! Great Job!
Kaylee set the tone for girls Varsity, which ran on Saturday. The goal became
for everyone to come in under 20 minutes. Kaylee was the motivation! The early
morning wake-up call at 5:00AM was a bit tough, but it all paid off. As we left
the bus I noticed that Tiana was not in team gear. She was sporting a lovely
GREEN sweatshirt with the saying of “DUDE, just Run”. This has become our
new motto. Just Run!! No need to think, just pick them up and put them down,
and we did just that. The girls Varsity looked great. Nica and Erika ran great
together in the front (18:29) followed with another strong performance by
Jessica (18:54) and Brooke McCandless (19:14) Tiana (19:35)!. Michelle
(19:44) and Holli (20:04) closed it up for the girls, and they all finished within
4 seconds of their goal, and took a convincing 1st place with a score of 96 points.
JUST RUN!! The girls finished 12 overall.
Girls Freshman team ran strong, taking 3rd place. The team was lead by
Brooke Evans, Jessica Hansen, Marilyn Triviso, Bethany Balady and Kat
Gonzalez.
The Boys JV also had to run on Friday. Michael Stewart, Jonathan Lloyd,
Justin Francis and Jonathan Meisterling all did a great job!! The Boys
Varsity had a bit of a shock to the system, as they were the first race of the
(Mt.Sac Cont.)
(15:59), followed by Matt Peng (16:34) Ray Villalobos (16:39)
Yael (17:23) and Jared (17:42). The Boys took 2nd place with a
team time of 79:35!
Other great performances: Freshman Jeomar Muro took 3 rd in
the freshman race with a time of (17:12). Sophomore race: Gus
Sjobeck improved by 2 minutes and was the sole runner from
our school!!(17:59) Emily Olson – be one with the Hill!!! Great
job at 2:30 faster than the last race.
Gatorade Awards: Bryce, Best Boys time! Gus Sjobeck improved
by 2 minutes. Emily Olson huge improvement. The Whole Girls
Varsity Team!!
Great Job Broncos!!!!!
Southwestern League Finals 2009
Diamond Valley 11/5/09
Wow!!! If you weren’t at the League Finals race, you missed out
on viewing one of the most exciting days of racing for the Bronco
Family. The day started with our JV girls running great, lead by
Kaylee Howard, Carleen Taylor, Jessica Hansen, Alison
Shelton and Bethany Balady. They finished in 2nd beating out
Murrieta Valley by 2 points to retain 2nd Place in league.
Great Job Girls JV!!!! You Rock!!
Boys JV came into League Finals like the girls JV team, owning
2nd place. But like we all know, anything can happen at league
finals. The guys were ready to run, and run they did. Lead by
Michael Stewart, Jared Balady, Gus (the man) Sjobeck,
Jonathon Lloyd and Austin Sorensen. All five runners finished
in the top 16. There was no question who owned 2 nd place for
league finals. The Bronco Boy’s JV team took 2nd with a score
of only 48!! Congratulations!!
Girls Varsity. All year the girls have been plagued with injury or
sickness. Everytime someone went down, someone else stepped
up. Once again we have the same situation, with Jessica not
running. The Broncos stepped up to the line with a new attitude.
Confidence, strength and most importantly, “Dude, just Run”.
They looked great in the first mile and had a great finish. Erika
was able to break up the Great Oak team, finishing in 3rd place,
followed by Nicaela in 6th. Brooke Evans was back running
strong and stepped up huge, taking 13th place, followed by
another solid performance by Brooke McCandless and Holli
Erickson. Tiana Barnes is still running out of control crazy, and
was followed by our ever dependent Michelle Hernandez. All
girls finished in the top 20 under 20 minutes!!! The girls took a
convincing 2nd place with a score of just 53 points! The girls will
move on to the CIF Prelims November 14th, and will run @
10:50. Erika and Nicaela received 1st Team All League
Awards, while the others all received 2nd Team All League
Awards. The girls are currently ranked 5th in the Southern
Section, and continue to train hard to reach their goal of State!
Let’s Go Girls!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations!
Boys Varsity came into League Finals tied for second. They
would need to take 1st place in order to be repeat Southwestern
League Champs. No pressure. Drew and Bryce did it again taking
1st and 2nd place. Porter Reddish has been huge all year and
continued to focus on staying close to Bryce and Drew. Porter
was in a battle for 3rd place the whole race and took 4th by just a
few seconds. Now the race was on. Ray Villalobos and Yael
Espinal had a great push by new Varsity team mate Jeomar
Muro. From there Ray and Yael took off running a great race.
Ray finished in 12th, Yael in 14th and Jeomar in 16th followed
by Matt Peng in 21st. This proved to be just enough to get the job
done. We all waited in anticipation for the final results. They Did
It!!!!!! The Boys took 1st place by 2 points!!!!!
Southwestern League Champs 2009!!
morning. No Worries, Just Run! And that’s what they did. Bryce broke out in
front. Drew was able to battle toward the front just before switchbacks. By the
time they were to poopout hill, Bryce and Drew took control, and finished once
again with a strong 1-2 performance with Bryce (15:09) and Drew (15:14)
Porter, who ran Mt. Sac for the 1st time, ran 3rd for the team once again
