CETL Teaching and Learning Grant Purpose and Guidelines 2011
The purpose of the CETL Teaching and Learning Grants is to encourage innovative teaching and learning at
SCSU. Grants will be given to faculty and staff working with students to implement innovative and effective
teaching and learning—curricular and co-curricular--projects, write a short report, and present their work
to their peers at CETL’s Second Annual Teaching and Learning Fair ’12 during the Fall 2012 Convocation.
Applications will be reviewed by a sub-committee of the Faculty Association CETL Advisory Committee. If
we receive applications from members of other bargaining units, the CETL Director will invite the presidents
of those units to select or appoint one or more representatives to serve on the selection committee.
Completed CETL Teaching and Learning Grant applications (Signature Page (s) and 1 original application:
pages 3-5 of this document only) must be delivered to the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
(Miller Center 310) by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25, Tuesday, November 1, 2011. Applications must
also be sent electronically to cetlga@stcloudstate.edu by the same deadline. Proposals received after the
deadline or incomplete proposals will not be considered.
Applicant criteria:
 Applicants must be SCSU faculty or staff both at the time of application and at the time of grant
activity.
 No more than one application per individual may be submitted or funded during any application
round.
 Proposals by disciplinary or interdisciplinary groups of faculty and/or staff are encouraged.

Hints for writing a successful grant application:
 Use the criteria and evaluation rubric as a guide when writing the grant application.
 Proofread the grant proposal carefully to be sure your ideas are clearly communicated.
 Ask a colleague or committee member to read a draft copy before submitting the final version.
 Ensure you submit a complete application with the narrative and required signatures.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Applications will be reviewed by a sub-committee of the Faculty Association CETL Advisory Committee. If
we receive applications from members of other bargaining units, the CETL Director will invite the presidents
of those units to select or appoint one or more representatives to serve on the selection committee.
The selection committee will use the evaluation form below to judge the quality of each application. The
highest ranked applications would be normally ones which:
a. Are submitted by teams of faculty and/or staff from the same discipline or interdisciplinary,
b. Describe plans to disseminate expertise gained more widely to other individuals and groups on
campus,
c. Include multiple methods of evaluating the approach being experimented,
d. Are capable of being adapted by others, and
e. Have potential for broader dissemination and development.

CETL TEACHING AND LEARNING GRANT APPLICATION NARRATIVE
I. Project Description: In this section, please respond to the following questions:
1) Explain your project and how you will use the funds for which this request is being made,
2) Clearly state the objectives and outcomes of the project,
3) Describe the details of the pedagogical or other approach you intend to use, the events,
activities, the strategies, your role and that of the students,
4) Explain the manner in which you will assess whether the implementation of the approach
has been successful or not, and,
5) Describe the project’s potential for dissemination and development such as possible
conference presentation, publication, grants, etc.
II. Alignment with CETL’s Mission and Vision: In this section, please describe briefly how your
project aligns with the mission and vision of CETL to create a community of scholars engaging
students in teaching and learning. For details, please refer to our website at
www.stcloudstate.edu/teaching.
III. Alignment with SCSU’s Learning Commitments: Briefly describe how your project aligns with
one or more of SCSU’S Learning Commitments of Active and Applied Learning, Community
Engagement, Sustainability, and Global and Cultural Understanding. For details, please refer to the
website of the Office of the President, http://www.stcloudstate.edu/president/mission.asp.
IV. Alignment with professional development/evaluation process: Briefly explain how you have
included the objectives of your project in your professional development processes and how you
intend to document the results. Please describe for each applicant separately:
V. Long Term Outcomes and Benefits: Explain how your project may be institutionalized by and
with other faculty/staff in your department/program/unit or in other units in the future.
VI. BUDGET:
All applications must include a simple budget request according to the elements given below. At this time
you may simply describe the budget items and an approximate cost. If you receive the award, you will be
required to fill out the required forms with supporting evidence and receipts in order to be paid. The award
will pay for supplies including books and/or specialized software, travel, and/or a stipend (stipends must
include 37% for fringe benefits). The grant amount will be a maximum of $1,000 per project for individuals,

and a maximum of $1,500 for teams. If the budget is to be split between team members, please indicate
clearly the budget share for each member of the team. Funds will be paid by way of budget transfer to the
appropriate departments/centers upon completion of the work and after project reports are submitted. If
the award is made, changes of more than 20% between categories will need approval by CETL.
